This looks so promising! One day I will be able to replace the pools of dangerous mud (?) with some blocks of safe dirt, and to turn those containers with purple ghosts into harmless rocks, thanks to your great efforts, Calindro. :)

Changing the meta tile with the pink skull already prevents the ghost from spawning. Unfortunately altering the lava and mud meta tiles doesn't help at all. For that you will need to alter the level layout itself I guess.

I'ts amazing!! Finally some tools for SMS games are showing up. In some time, we can have true hacked SMS games in the same level of excellent hacks we can find in other systems.

I'm imagining a Alex Kidd in Miracle World hack with 4M filled with a lot of stages, and with a map system!!

Good work Calindro!! Keep going!!

Hi guys,

the level editor now also supports editing the level layouts. Now you can remove evil things like dangerous mud and lava :) I've already updated the initial post and added a screenshot of this feature.

yeah - I did just that, and now my local Radaxian landscape is a whole lot safer. Also you can speed up your boat, peticopter or motorcycle, without having to think about running into red balls, spikes etc.

Nice and user-friendly tool!

Awesome! Glad to see a level editor for a SMS game. If you ever feel like tackling a Zillion level editor I'd happily throw money at you.

Hi guys,

the editor now also allows the modification of tilesets, nametables, box contents and game settings (see screenshots in original post). Also I have added a zoom feature (requested by hang-on) and animations to bring some life into the modding experience.

I'm still looking for testers so please don't hesitate sending me your email address by pn if you are interested.

Hi olaf,

I will have a look at it as soon as there is not much left to do on the Alex Kidd Editor. :)

Wow, this looks awesome! I can't wait to try it out! I'll shoot you a pm in a second...

By the way, when it's done, you might want to consider uploading this to a site like romhacking.net, so that it will get more exposure to those who would be interested in using it. Just a suggestion.

OK, after playing around with this for a bit, I have a few suggestions:

-The entity editor is hard to use, because you have to know what entities are available on each level, as well as their hexadecimal value. I think it would be good to have a pull-down list of the different entities available for easy selection.

-The ability to put any entity in any level. I want to put scorpions in Level 1, for example.

-A readme explaining how everything works, especially more obtuse stuff, like the metatileset editor, or the box content editor.

-The ability to change the flow of a level. For example, if I'm editing Level 1, there's only so much I can do with "go down, then right."

I'll let you know if I think of anything else. Otherwise, it's really good.

Hi Arjak,

thank you for your feedback!

Every entity works on every level. There are 153 different entities and I don't know all of them so adding a pull-down list would restrict you to only use the entities I already know of. But you are right it's not very comfortable to use. I've already added the preview window to make it a little bit more comfortable and I will think of a way to make it even more comfortable.

If you want to use the scorpions in level 1 you might want to replace some loaded tiles by the scorpion tiles using the tileset editor.

Arjak wrote

There is no readme yet because this is still a prototype and a lot of things might still change. I thought I had given you all the relevant information in the mail already. But feel free to ask what is unclear. I will provide a readme when I start releasing open beta versions.

Arjak wrote

That already works by pressing the 'C' key but it will only work if you haven't changed the level layout yet (that's why there is no official way to do it yet - but I'm working on it). After the conversion you can freely edit the level layout.

I'm looking forward for more feedback!
Thank you
Calindro

So I changed the first few screens of Level 1, saved as a ips patch, and when I applied it and started up the rom, nothing but a black screen. It seems like the rom doesn't like the changes made. :(

I've tried applying the patch both in my standard program, and in the editor itself; both yielded the same result. I don't know if it's me or the program, but I'd really like to be able to play the levels I make.

Can you send me the ips file plz? I will have a look on what's going wrong.

It's attached to this post.

By the way, I have another couple suggestions: a text editor, in case one wants to create their own storyline, and a graphics editor.

Hi Arjak,

your file works for me, both in my emulator and in my editor. Can you describe what you are doing and what happens?

Thank for you suggestions!
A tile editor is coming soon. The text editor is also planned but it will take more time because I haven't analyzed the text mechanisms in the game yet.

... I have experienced something similar, and the cure was "Expand to 256K" from the AK level editor's menu.

That solved it! Making sure both the patch and original rom had been expanded before patching made it work! Thanks, Hang-On! :D

I have discovered a major bug: I've noticed that occasionally, usually after working on a level for a while, that when I attempt to change screens with the arrow keys, the screens start glitching out in the editor. This consists of level screens suddenly changing their layout in strange ways, screens being replaced with clones of other screens from the level, etc. The only way to fix it is to quit without saving and reopen the program.

Hi Arjak,

I've never experienced this behavior before. The other testers didn't report such problems either. Could you please provide more detailed information on how to provoke this problem so I can reproduce it?

Haha - this is great. I've already had quite a few good hours with the editor by now. My only real problem is that the Alex Kidd-based "Light Souls" game, that we talked about a couple of months ago, is now actually achieveable for a guy like me. Now I got no excuses... :)

Well done, Calindro!

I was discussing with my brother earlier today how cool it would be to be able to make our own levels of Alex Kidd (or simply to play a good hack if there was one). Amazing to see that someone's working on it, thanks a lot for your time, can't wait to try this editor :)

after a while of silence I have now added a Shop Editor. It allows to alter the items being sold in a shop and using the Item Editor the prices for the items can be adjusted. See main post for screenshot.

Hi guys,

there are 3 new editors available now!
A sprite editor allowing to move around sprites.
A janken match editor allowing to change the decisions made by your opponents in the janken match.
And a riddle editor allowing to change the riddle at the end of the game.
I've attached screenshots to the main post. :)

I'm still looking for testers so please contact me if you're interested! :)

Great!!! KiddEd and me have already had some good times, even though it clearly deserves to be used for something greater than re-arranging the level elements in order to make the game less hard from a 5-year old's point of view :)

Very impressive work, Calindro!

Well done, incredible work to pull this together!

I'm with hang-on in that I think you should try aim to make it less an editor to shift around what's already there and more an editor to make a new game from scratch, if so desired -- though I understand from our discussion there's some particular oddities that make that rather difficult (the way above / below water screens are matched together).

Yeah, a 'from-scratch' platform game designer would also be great :) I still remember how thrilled I was about Klik & Play back in the 90's...

I think that KiddEd has so much potential. I have yet to put the full suite of cool editors to good use, since my main concern has been to use KiddEd to 'adapt' the existing Alex Kidd to the needs of my then 5 year old son. This included really basic stuff like replacing lava with solid ground etc. Now my son almost kicks my ass in the different games. I say almost, since I have 25+ years head start into most of them... "Haha, I am your father!" "No way.. Hadouken!" :)

I'm dreaming about, some day, using KiddEd to make the 'Light Souls' game discussed elsewhere (http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=14227&highlight=light+souls); a kind of 'Alex Kidd in Medieval World' game :)

For now I'm putting myself into pixel art school, in order to turn Alex's fist into a sword, and so on. And also turn Alex into a little 'square' knight... I'm at the conceptualize stage still (see attachment). From paper to KiddEd's sprite editor. And then some castle tiles, and then...

Sorry about all this stuff, it is not a thread hi-jack attempt, but my way of illustrating KiddEd's place in my life :)

Hi guys,

I've just released a new version of KiddEd.
The new version now also allows converting a level's layout to the other layouts like the L-shape layout for example.
Besides that you will find a new entry in the Edit menu that allows removing single screens from a level.

I've also fixed a nasty bug in the update system! I'm sorry for any inconvenience this might have caused!

Awesome to see updates are still being made to the editor.
I have a fairly large retro game collection and own all Alex Kidd games,
but sometimes when I'm asleep, I actually dream that I'm finding super
rare Alex Kidd games I never saw before, and I wake up pissed it wasn't
real. This editor could make that sort of a reality. I sure hope people who
have made use of the editor post their games!!

If I were a millionaire, I would pay people to make more Alex Kidd games for the Master System!!

Alex Battler and the Miracle Axe
Post Posted: Thu Dec 11, 2014 2:51 pm
Box text:
------------------
Death Adder ordered the forging of the Miracle Axe in a desperate attempt at universal domination. This axe, drawing on the infinite magic of a place called Miracle World, was to be so powerful that even the Golden Axe would be no match. But something went terribly wrong, and now the mellow Miracle World is merging with the dark and tortured land of Yuria. New horrors emerge out of this melting pot, but new heroes do as well. As Alex Battler, the unfortunate hybrid of Alex Kidd and Ax Battler, your job is to use your sword and wits to restore peace and order, and to ultimately bring Death Adder to justice in a janken deathmatch.
--------------------

Even though I have mostly used KiddEd to simplify Alex Kidd for my then 5 year old son, I sometimes dream about making Alex Battler and the Miracle Axe.

There are already some smaller hacks like for example: http://www.elotrolado.net/hilo_kidded-editor-de-niveles-para-alex-kidd-in-miracle-world-modificacion-hard-mode_1978388

@hang-on
Alex Battler cooler than ever before but looks really angry today :)
