How to Use BPS and IPS Patch Files - Hacks

Hacks are generally distributed as patches to reduce download size and avoid copyright issues. To create the final patched file, you will need:

The original unmodified version of the game (the "ROM")
The patch
Patching software

We provide patches in two formats:

IPS

This is a very old format which has been widely used for many years. IPS files do not include any check that the patch is applied to the correct file - please check that you have the correct size and version file before and after patching.

BPS

This is a much more modern format than IPS and has several advantages:

It checks that the input file is the correct one
It produces smaller patches in many cases, especially when data has been rearranged
It reliably supports "expansion" of the ROM

Software

We recommend Floating IPS. Download Floating IPS 1.31 for Windows and Linux.
