SMS2 not working :/
Post Posted: Sat Mar 03, 2007 10:27 pm
Hey guys, I just registered here :)

Does anyone have any idea of how to fix this if it is even possible?

This particular place near the processor looks strange:

Help would be greatly appreciated, I miss playing it :(

Higher resolutions are available too, by the way, just ask!

Looks like a bit of glue, nothing really out of the ordinary. Something you should check, because it happened to me - the power adapter, that is, the brick/cord stopped working because of a break somewhere along the cord.

You should describe the symptoms if possible.

Also, the main processor is the longest chip behind the cartridge port.

Looks like a blown capacitor to me. Is there a burnt smell near the part you highlighted?

There was a kinda strange smell when I opened it, but that might have been all the dust.
It might be the power adapter actually, I havent checked that. In fact, I do not know how to check it :)

I did not expect an answer so soon, you guys are really awesome :)

Did someone barf on that board? The black thing with the two wires surrounded by all the goo is actually a ferrite bead (FB7) and unless you have hit it with a hammer it is not broken ;-)

Just clean the board firstly with a soft 1inch (2.5 cm) dry paint brush to remove all excess dust. Then use an old toothbrush to gently clean between the IC pins (especially IC9 - it looks like things are growing in there). Finaly, use a cotton bud (Q-Tip) or similar soaked in isopropyl alcohol to swab out the goo around FB7 and anywhere else for that matter. Set the board to one side and allow it to vent for several hours (over night is better) so that all the alcohol evaporates.

Isopropyl alcohol may be obtained in small quantities from chemists (pharmasists, drug stores) as rubbing alcohol.

Next check your power supply with a voltmeter or multimeter. If you don't have a meter get someone to check it for you.

Alternativerly, just buy one of those multi purpose, multi voltage power bricks with multi fittings. You need 10 volts at 500mA (milli Amperes).

The voltage is not too critical as it is regulated internally by the SMS. However, I would not recommend more than a 12V unregulated supply since the input capacitor is only rated to 16V. (Some unregulated 12V power supplies can generate as much as 17V when lightly loaded). The important thing is that the connector into the back of the SMS is center grounded:

  + ------( o----- -  10V 500mA

Plug it in and enjoy. Hope this helps.

Regards
Marty

Since I'm newly registered, I couldn't create a separate thread for my question. I own a Sega Master System II. I've modded it with 50 / 60 Hz switch and I'd like to add AV jacks if that's possible.

I was poking around the internet looking for a tutorial but only found those for regular SMS. I'd really appriciate any help.
