Competitions 2016

Rules

Ultra-short rules:

The same as every year.

Slightly longer rules:

Deadline is 27th March 2016. You may choose to interpret that in any reasonable way.

There are three main competitions: coding, hacks and music.

Coding competition

Write something that runs on a Sega 8-bit home system which isn't a hack.

Hacks competition

Make a hack of a game for a Sega 8-bit home system. There's a fairly strong chance you'll be using KiddEd...

Music competition

Make some music that either uses the sound chip(s) from an Sega 8-bit home system, or is an arrangement of music from commercial software for that system.

The small print

* Super-offensive or overly illegal content will get your entry rejected. Be nice.
* Entries should be either made for this competition, or substantially different to any earlier release.
* Coding entries must be in a format that works with a wide variety of emulators, i.e. raw ROM image or disk images. Tape images and wacky custom formats are no good.
* Hack entries must be either in a format like for coding entries, or in the form of an IPS patch. You must give details of the original file(s) your hack is based on.
* Music entries can be in any format you like, provided it's VGM or MP3. You are welcome to also provide the same music in some other format alongside it.

How to enter

competition@smspower.org

You should receive an automatic response when it is received. To make sure you do:

* Attach the file(s), don't link to RapidPirateUpload.com
* Mention the word "competition" in your subject line

Please include your forum name and any description you'd like to include with your entry. For music, say if it's original or a cover (and what of); including cover art makes you 20% more awesome. Of course, including source (for both music and code) is great.

Cover art competition
During the voting period, we'll also run a "fun" competition to produce some Master System cover art. This should be in the style of normal Master System export games - whether the classic "grid plus clipart" style or something a bit more '90s. It can be for any game - so it could be for a Master System game you wish had better cover art, or for a homebrew Master System game you like, or just something funny where you make Master System art for a modern game. We'll have a little extra vote after the main voting ends to pick a favourite.

--------------------------------------------------------------
Original post follows...

Let's have competitions again this year!

I suggest we have the usual coding and music competitions, plus we could have something extra for fun - I'm thinking either a Graphic Board art completion, or a cover art competition where we make SMS style art for games that didn't have it. What do you think?

The deadline will be 27th March as always. That coincides with Easter this year so you may have some free time at the last minute if that gets you a national holiday in your country.

Also, prizes: do we want to have them? If so, what?

Or games that didn't get a Master System release.

Regarding cover art - I am toying between "classic" (grid plus terrible clipart) covers for later games that had real artwork, or something similar for any game you like (similar to http://kotaku.com/5683890/kotaku-shop-contest-sega-master-system-covers ). It would be strictly just for fun, no prizes for half an hour in Photoshop...

I think "classic" would be much more entertaining. More challenging, too.

With all these lovely hacks popping up, how about a category for rom hacks?

Cover art and ROM hacks would be great categories! This time, I will have no excuse to not participate to this great competition.

How about also allowing real artwork cover for games that had awful artworks and could be vastly improved? Because I recently designed one of this kind with the help of a fellow repro designer for a Master System game that got release with a terrible "real artwork" cover, but I didn't do a classic grid one because it would have been chronologically unfitting: the game is from the mid-90s.

I think actually good original artwork is in a totally different category to "clipart on grid" parodies, which are trying to be funny. It'd be unfair to judge them against each other, and I don't want to dilute things further.

A shame nobody wants to use the Graphic Board :) and not much call for prizes either, which makes things easier.

I still have one of my competition prizes from years ago (the green SMS 1 shirt). Unfortunately I have gotten a bit fat and it no longer fits me very well anymore :( Maybe it's some good incentive to lose weight.

Also, I like the idea of the ROM hacks category and I am excited to see what KiddEd hacks come from it!

I still have that shirt also and it fits me perfectly still.
But my wife doesn't like it, because the green is faded and it's not to her liking anymore.

Also, count me in for the music competition, and perhaps something using twee2sam.

If one of you is happy to organise all of it (money collection, designing/arguing about t-shirts, ordering them, dispatching) then why not. Personally I won't have time as I am already way too overworked :( and I'm not sure Maxim can either but feel free to step in if you can.

Perhaps a(nother) competition kind ? (i.e. designing a t-shirt for the competition).

I reckon I've forgotten half of what I learned last year I have gone very rusty, but I think I will have a crack at a game entry. Who else is coding games this year?

Oh.. a question for the masses. Will you take a YM2612 entry? I mean it does have PSG :P but I know it isn't strictly SMS... It's just I am working on a tune at the moment.

If it's an arrangement of an 8-bit tune, yeah. Else, nah.

Jacko, I think you meant "a Mega Drive / Genesis entry", because the YM2612 is, by definition, a YM2612, thus it doesn't "have PSG" :P

That said, as you might remember since you liked it, I did that in 2009, so yeah, like Maxim said, if you make a cover of an 8-bit song you should be fine. I wonder if I should experiment with some other chip like the YM2151, or... dunno. I doubt I'm going to enter, sadly.

I'm working on something. Not sure if I can whip it into a playable state before the compo starts, though. Progress has been rather slow lately.

I second the rom hack category. This is absolutely coincidental and has nothing to do with us working on a rom hack :o

Philipp, the deadline is the 27th of March. You can start making your entries now! Target systems are anything Sega Master System related whether it be coding, music, and I think there was an artwork section this year too!

We may even have cool prizes for the lucky winners as well.

Rules recap, please! :)

Also, I found funny the way we did last year, with the topic created (with 'censored' titles) as soon as the entry was submitted. Are we going to do that again? :)

To avoid revealing the names (which might affect others, e.g. if you see someone else made a similar entry) but also to confirm to the writer that it is successfully received.

How is everybody doing with the preparations? :) I'm firmly getting to the point where SMS-development is eating up most of my free time.... Had to NOT install dev tools on my work computer to keep me just a little focused during office hours.

Looking forward to the celebrations later this month!

nop ;)
With vingazole we are finishing "Boom" (new/final name is Neko Blasters) before reworking on Lost Raider.
(we really hope to finish Neko Blasters this year)

For the compo, it's a little dev only by myself ^^
(vingazole is just my private beta tester, lol.)
