Yet another Sega 8-bit based handheld:

Might be all based around the same technology/license, since so many appeared in the past year.

It's frustrating that they make things like this in a half-assed way. I bet the MP3 player and SMS/GG player are completely separate, whereas if I were designing the thing, I'd allow the MP3 storage area to be used for SMS/GG ROMs too. Most of us would want that too, right?

Well, I think that would add a huge cost to the unit. look at how much a Tototek flash cart costs.

Alot of specialised interface hardware there.

In fact, the way they're designed, you could put the tototek cart works inside it, or just put a cart slot on it and play whatever you want on any number of ways.

This is a machine that was already released.
Just 10 games and a huge cost.
Strange how this post gets replies, but that nobody cares about the coleco or playpal thread I mad, boohoo! *cries*.
But seriously, I think alot of us like to see a cheap sms handheld we can just throw in our cars and just whip out whenever a spare moment of non-driving comes up.
The games are stored somewhere. And in theory one should be able to add roms to it. But I don't think it will be easy with this model. With it's high tech mp3 stuff and all. I wish some hacker would check out the coleco/playpal and open it up and see if it is possible.

I have innard pics of the playpal.
It's just a little ROM chip, same concept of the Genesis-on-a-chip systems, which ave been modded for cart slots.
it wouldn't be hard to figure out how it's determining what mode(SMS/GG) to be in, but other than that it should be relatively simple to add a cart slot(or two).
The Coleco is $20 on Target.com
if I had the confidence in my skills to do this mod, I'd have one by now. I bought some music theory books instead.
