Extracting sound effects from ROMs

I wonder if it's possible to extract sound effects directly from SMS ROMs, into .WAVs or .MP3s.
I have made a long search, and I haven't found anything about it.
If this is not possible, how could I manually record sound effects without music interference (I'm with Phantasy Star game in my mind)?

Search for "music trigger hacks". The same applies to sound effects. You can then record to VGM, WAV or whatever your emulator supports and convert from there.

Got it! Thank you very much for the help.
I was able to edit the memory with Meka (record C004), mute the music (code '00') and then play all the sound effects in sequence (a0 - d4), while dumping it to a wave file. Perfect!
