Wonder Boy in Monster Land debug mode?

Is there a Wonder Boy in Monster Land debug mode?

A recent post on Neogaf:

In monsterland ... Another little known fact (?) was the sms title had a debug/glitch mode. My sister used to reset the title after the first level if she didn't get enough gold. If you bumped the cartridge "just right" it would reset and allow you to do all sorts of crazy stuff and was all in japanese.

I have never heard of it before, but after searching on google I found this post:

I always thought it was weird that the demo has WB decked out in the cloth boots, light shield, and light armor and carrying the broad sword. You can't get any of that stuff in round 1! Maybe it was played in some sort of debug mode?

Maxim, your expertise is required ;)

The demo is quite apart from any debug mode; they probably recorded the demo inputs in a debug equipment scenario that they then had to maintain for the demo to work properly, but it is probably just a bit of code that runs just for the demo. A "debug mode" in the final ROM would be quite something else. A description of "crazy japanese stuff" could just be a regular glitch if there is a Japanese font in VRAM.

I'll see if I can have a look, anyway.

Since you're looking for ways to mess around...

I remember from my childhood that you could get some weird effects to the game by switching from a normal controller to a SG Commander controller with rapid fire enabled. Wonder Boy would fall through the map and into random-tile-land.

This is a known bug when holding both LEFT and RIGHT direction simultaneously. It is possible to perform on some emulators and when pushing strong over the center of a control pad also possible sometimes.

Coincidentally I've been working fairly extensively into reverse engineering Wonder Boy III recently.

Did you find anything secret yet? You should dump info to the wiki as you go...

TBH I am guessing we won't find anything new, but for now I am trying to reverse engineering the map/object data to recursively explore the game content.

One thing to look for is what makes certain item drops happen, like the tornadoes and dragon armour in the lava area, as we don't know what triggers those. I suspect some potion drops are script-triggered too.
