I recently got myself this controller board to hook up a 3020 controller to my pc.

Used an extension cord for a mouse which i cut in 2 and connected the wires using this schema:

To this usb controller board (used for arcade cabinets)
http://www.arcadewinkel.nl/componenten/interfaces/mini-controller-1speler

Works very good. There are other boards out there to convert a db9 cable to a usb controller.

Maybe you know some other (easy to use) compatible boards?
