New VGM website
Post Posted: Fri Dec 09, 2011 10:12 am
Well, here we go.
The long-awaited website for VGM files is online (to be precise it's not a website but it's only a forum), and it is available here:
http://vgm.mdscene.net/forum/index.php

Please note it's pretty much unfinished by now, namely there are no FAQs and no documents about VGM files (how to create/edit/replay them), not to mention the filenames are inconsistent and there are probably several other problems all over the place, which is why I wanted to keep it secret for another while. However, on ValleyBell's suggestion, I'm making it public now, it might be a good idea after all, so people can post their suggestions and their bug reports in case there's something wrong (of course, if you happen to find any problems related to security, you should report them directly to me using a private message, unless you're a terrorist who wants to hijack the website).
All the existing VGM packs are uploaded and divided by system (to not clutter up thing excessively, for now all the Arcade games are listed in the Arcade section; there will always be time to separate them into more specific systems).
I didn't add support for attachments because I don't believe in them; submissions of new VGM packs should be uploaded somewhere else and linked into a new thread in the Submissions subforum. If this turns out to be a problem for enough people I will look into installing attachments but I'd really prefer to avoid that.
Everyone is welcome to create an account and spread the word, we have the chance to become the third important website dedicated to VGM files (one is this very smspower of course, for Sega 8-bit music, and the other one is project2612, for Mega Drive / Genesis music). I hope people such as Martin, Delek, and Shiru, can register and post about their programs. I will create a new usergroup with additional priviledges for programmers or something.

A gigantic sincere THANK YOU goes to Oerg866, who's running this whole thing on his own server.

edit: I crossposted a similar version of this message on project2612, SSRG, and RetroHack. I might post it on gendev as well but I think they wouldn't be too interested, I'd rather post on ocremix with one of my alt accounts, but if I do so I would blow my cover :P

It seems that Oerg's server has been down all day long today, I don't know why, I can't know why. Hopefully it will be back up soon :|

And for this first 12 hours, too.

It's up again.
HD failure + OS failure - Oerg866 must have had a hard day.

I know, I noticed yesterday, I tried to contact Oerg but he didn't reply. There is nothing we can do until he looks at his server.
We should consider to collect donations via Paypal to buy a professional hosting solution or something.

It's being alternatively up and down right now. I guess there's a lot of traffic going on because of the massive update (39 new packs iirc). It will get better eventually.

The server is oil-operated? The thing is going down and up all time! Like an elevator!

I'm on holiday until 22th September, so I'm not online until then.
I hope the server works then, I prepared a few updates.

Hi. here's what happened:

* Aug 31 I took the switch with me to a computing event I attended
* Sep 2 I came back, put it in place (or so i thought)
* Sep 3 I left for holiday but I did not test if the server was back up before I did so. Apparently i did something wrong when i put the switch and stuff back....

Now I'm stuck in the US until september 23 and I cannot do anything about it until then, sorry.

I might as well post a link to our IRC channel in this topic since the website won't be online anytime soon.
