I asked a similar question a few months ago and there's a detailed reply from Maxim:

I'm not sure we have this information - to be honest there are probably very few non-competitive simultaneous two-player games on the SMS, I can't think of any.

Perhaps we could add a tag for this? |

Quartet is also one of the most enjoyable co-op experiences offered on the SMS. Definitely check it out.

A discussion on a similar topic here led to the creation of the "CPU vs CPU" tag. Therefore I believe a tag would be a sensible way to record this information as well. I'm currently thinking of naming the tag "Multiplayer Co-op". Any better suggestions? |

You can use the filter function in RetroCopy to do all kinds of searches in my Master System game database.
Selecting "MultiPlayer Coop" gives you this complete list of multiplayer co-op games: Andre Agassi Tennis Battlemaniacs Bubble Bobble Double Dragon Double Hawk Dragon - The Bruce Lee Story F-16 Fighter Fantasy Zone: The Maze Gain Ground Galactic Protector Gangster Town Gauntlet Ms. Pac-Man Quartet Rampage Satellite 7 Scramble Spirits Secret Command Super Smash T.V. Super Space Invaders Super Tennis Tennis Ace Time Soldiers Wimbledon Wimbledon II WWF WrestreMania - Steel Cage Challenge |

Super Kick Off has team mode where player two is goalie.
Which makes me think, is there any other coop game where players have clearly different roles? Not just different characters, but doing different things. |

Done. I've confirmed that each of the games listed on that page has a 2-player mode featuring some aspect of cooperation. A few games have been suggested (either in this thread or here) which I have not tagged - please do so if you know something I don't: F-16 Fighting Falcon: I am unable to play in 2-player mode. Is there an emulator which supports this?
Global Defense: 1-player only? Micro Machines: Competitive racing only? Streets of Rage: 1-player only? Streets of Rage II: 1-player only? Super Kick Off: Using MEKA, "Team Mode" does not seem to work for me. |

Yep, I think it is only the Game Gear versions of the Streets of Rage games that are 2-player, not SMS.

global defense and f16 fighting falcon, I believe, have codes you can enter that allow you to use 2 controllers to control the game. That's why they're probably listed.

Global Defense:
Meaning, it's not really two player. It's one player using two control pads. Of course, you can be two players if you want, but you're controlling the same object. F-16 Fighting Falcon must be controlled using two control pads, but that only makes it one player. It can however be two player, connecting two sets of Japanese Mark III and the SK-1100 keyboard together via a special cable, playing on two different TVs. No emulator support that yet though (there have been discussions about trying to emulate this in RetroCopy, but it's not been done yet), but that doesn't mean it can't be two player coop. I think this only applies to the Japanese version of the game though. See also http://www.smspower.org/forums/viewtopic.php?p=59528#59528 |

I did manage to get Super Kick Off team mode working on Meka (at least an older one, 0.6 something), but there was something odd, at first try only directions worked for player two, not buttons. But then it started to work ok.
There just isn't much to do for goalie in the game. |

What's the problem with team mode in Kick Off, an emulation problem?
F-16 Fighting Falcon explicitely mention the option in the manual as far as I remember and thus we can say it was designed for this purpose. It doesn't matter if you are controlling one object. SDI is the same really, I think it's even more easy to grant it a Cooperative tag. |

What is the source of this quote? For the official word, the following comes from the game's manual (both US and Australian versions): Although meant for one player, Global Defense can be played as a two player game. To start, on CONTROL PAD #2, press RIGHT ARROW and BUTTON 2, or press LEFT ARROW and BUTTON 1.
Because of this mention of a cooperative 2-player mode in the manual, I have added the "Cooperative" tag to Games/GlobalDefense-SMS.
Agreed - F-16 is generally designed to be played by a single player using two control pads. The "Cooperative" tag should only be added to Games/F16FightingFalcon-SMS if the "simultaneous 2-player mode using a special cable" is cooperative (rather than competitive).
I am unable to get player 2 to play any significant part in a "Team Mode" game. This is the case in general - it is not a problem specific to MEKA. However, as with Global Defense, the cooperative 2-player mode is mentioned in the manual. I have therefore added the "Cooperative" tag to Games/SuperKickOff-SMS. |

I have never tried the cabling for F-16 Fighting Falcon but I assume it just synchronize inputs, and therefore is the same as playing on the same machine. However it would be worth investigating what the control scheme is when using keyboard inputs, if it differs in any way from using control pads (which is not totally unlikely in the case of this game). A few other early games also can be played on the keyboard but the list hasn't been completed/confirmed. See www.smspower.org/forums/13007-MarkIIISMSGamesWhichSupportTheSK1100Keyboard |
