Are the Brazillian 6 Button Pads the Same as Megadrive?
Post Posted: Thu Nov 24, 2011 11:59 pm
Just a quick question for you knowledgeable folks.

Pretty much the topic title. Are the Brazillian 6 button controllers released for Street Fighter 2 just the same as the 6 button Megadrive controllers or are there any differences (even just aesthetically)?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment. :)

Yes, the controller is compatible with MD, since the controller port is same (DB-9) for the SMS one. For example, Tectoy didn't changed the MD controllers color (gray) for a long time, and is used on both SMS/MD consoles.

But Tectoy can be changed something at controllers (like ICs), because Tectoy didn't produce the original console models from years.

So, are you saying that electronically they are different but just look alike? I mean what would happen, for argument's sake, if I stuck Street Fighter II in my SMS with a 6 button Megadrive controller? Would it work, do you know? :)

No they aren't the same thing.

Button A is button 1
Button B is button 2
Button C is buttons 1+2
Buttons X, Y and Z are buttons A, B, C in "rapid fire mode".

I'm talking about the first 6 button model released, the black one. Tectoy released anothers models. That ones I don't know.

Just so we're clear, PD is talking about this one, with a red LED instead of the Start button at the center:

Thanks for the info guys.

Is it still possible to buy these controllers? If it is, are they expensive, at all? :)

In Brazil, they are not expensive, but now is hard to find a new and original controller. You may find a pirate controller, because in Brazil there are a lot of pirate controllers...

Would someone help me buy an original one from Brazil? I would really like at least one for a modding project.

Maybe someone would be up for a trade? I have lots of Dreamcast and Ninty items that I could swap. :)

Ecofilmes also released a wireless infra-red 6-button controller for the Master System in Portugal, most probably a Tectoy original as the "portuguese purple" games.

I never owned one, I don't know if the extra buttons are mapped with those extra features, but if you're interested I'll let you know when I see one for sale on portuguese auction sites.

That would be nice. I'm really fascinated by controllers in general so it would be interesting to see them at least. Thank you. :)
