Retro Gamer's Game Gear Collector's Guide
Post Posted: Tue Jan 03, 2012 11:08 am
Issue 98 of Retro Gamer magazine hits UK newsagents on 5th January and includes a collector's guide written by myself.

There's also a short interview with Bock.

The guide contains a look at why the GG is collectable and round-ups of the best games, rarest games and recommend imports.

A lot of hard work went into it - the list of 10 best games was changed at least a dozen times before I was happy with what I'd chosen. Don't worry though - there's no sign of Rise of the Robots or Mortal Kombat 3.

US Game Gear fans, I believe you'll be able to buy it from Barnes & Noble.

This sounds like an issue of RG I might actually buy. Congratulations.

Got my copy today. Well written and informative article. I still find it hard to believe that I saw 12 pages devoted to the Sega Game Gear. Half the time, we're lucky to get 12 words.

The only thing I might have added is that some eBay sellers either do repairs or sell refurbished GGs (gearforgames and Mr Zorrow spring to mind), so you don't have to be good with a soldering iron to get a working GG as that part of the article seems to imply.

I got my issue through today, not had chance to read the artical yet but had a flick through and noted Bock's picture and chat :)

I'll look forward to reading this tonight.

My first thought is perhaps it could have had at least a full page chat with Bock and a few more pictures of his collection..

Hey Gooser any chance you could get me a copy of this thing? I'd love to have it with my collection? No Barnes & Noble anywhere close to me in the USA here. I'd gladly reimburse you for cost and shipping buddy.

One question though. When you say there is no mention of Rise of the Robots? You mean in terms of best games right? Because for the USA collection Rise of the RObots BOX is the ultimate cock block. There are only three known boxes that exist in collectors hands. Thank God I have one of them.

I also got myself a copy, had to order it off ebay as this country sucks for anything ever !

Really enjoyed the article, very well thought out and put together. It was awesome to see a "modern" magazine with such an in depth article about the beloved GG.

I can get you one if you don't win the auction, Braveheart.

And I meant no Rise of the Robots in the 'best games' category. There is a 'rarest games' bit, but they're all Euro games as Retro Gamer is mainly a UK-based magazine.

Glad that people have found it to be interesting and useful.

Forgot to state that I did win that auction and item is being shipped across the pond now. Can't wait to read it. It better be good Gooser since it cost me 15 GBP for a magazine! :)

It's a good issue, Braveheart. The Metal Slug and TMNT articles are interesting.

Glad you liked it, rg010803.

We need scans. Not paying 10 euro for a single issue, sorry.

I'm sure the pirates have it somewhere. The cover price is £5 which is about €6 so €10 is not too extortionate. I don't like to publish scans of things that are still commercially available, though.

Here's a scan of Bock's bit:

Fair enough but Imagine needs to sort their shipping price in their magazine shop. When I order multiple issues I still pay the same shipping price for each issue. To pay £11.25 shipping for three issues is ridiculous.

I don't usually buy magazines and was put off by the £5 price for quite a long while. It was the GG profile that finally sold the magazine to me.

Upon further perusal of RG, I particularly liked the articles on the TMNT coin-op and Space Harrier. If that issue had been especially written as a personal sales pitch to me it couldn't have done a better job at engaging my interest.
