Hey Mike, dont you have some pics from the stuff you did in your SMS to
turn it in JAP mode? :) Remember, a pic is more than 1000 words ;)

Okay then :-) Here's my SMS 2 with all the mods in place. Hope it's clear what you need to do to add the language switch.
<img>
Key is as follows:
1)Captive SCART cable (with RGB)
2)RGB mod
3)BIOS switch (+5v = JAP, 0v = US)
4)50/60Hz switch (+5v = 50Hz, 0v = 60Hz)
5)Language switch (0v for JAP, switch open (not connected) for ENG)
6)Dual BIOS (contains both Japan and US versions)
7)Connection to pin 23 of 315-5237 (to centre pin of language switch)
8)Connection to pin 33 of 315-5237 (reset switch)
9)Connection to pin 57 of 315-5246 (to centre pin of 50/60Hz switch)
10)Reset button (connects between pin 33 of 315-5237 and 0v)
11)Ground (0v) connection for all 3 switches
12)+5v connection for BIOS and 50/60Hz switches
Mike

no i have a blue and white striped Sheriden quilt set. maybe someday we'll all see it too when i take some happy snaps of my sms2 mods
- quilts do make the perfect photography backdrop.
anyways, back to topic...
i did try the language switch and it did work; i never knew PowerStrike was called Alestre! but i don't think it is an official method
for language switch, but more of a hardwire method. read on...
when i started my schematics i traced pin 23 to the TH pin of controller port 2 - controller port 1 TH pin is connected to pin 21, which
also does the language switch. grounding pin 21 or 23 of IC4 also grounds the TH pin at the controller port, rendering its function useless.
so i think that hardwiring these pins effects the 'lightgun bits' in port $DD and fools the software into thinking it a japanese machine.
if the mark3 does have the 315-5237 then perhaps these pins are grounded through a capacitor so it floats up to an open circuit after
the bios is shadowed and the cart checks the nationality, returning the function of the TH pin. maybe.....
what i'd like to know is if setting the state of these pins by a port $3F write ($FD or $DD) to logic low will cause the same sideffect.
or of course the toggle switch can be replaced with a momentary push button because the game stays in japanese mode after
it check the nationality and the IC4 pin is no longer grounded, hence TH pin still functions as I/O.
as for pinouts, sure i can get them up, if you can fill in the blanks =o), but shematics,hhmmm......
a s out.

Lets see....

So, what we need is just connect the centre pin from the 3-leg switch
to pin 23 of 315-5237 and ground one of the 2 pins left? and the third pin ? Looks easy.
Do you think this can be made in a SMS1 ?

I tend to prefers neutral background, and so last time I tried to takes pictures I used a black 'djelabah' (not sure how it's spelled) - it's an arabic kind of pyjama, and found that the result were good.
An exemple, and on-topic with your Aleste exclamation:

Yep - that's all that needs doing. (But see asynchronous's post too - this probably isn't the "proper" way to do it.) The third pin is not connected (don't know if you can see that in the pic).

Yes, but connect to pin 34 (I think) of the 315-5216 instead.
