Can certain batteries damage my Game Gear

After a LONG dragged out process of repairs on my old Game Gear, the man repairing the system simply handed me a new one today. Before I left, he said that he heard that certain batteries such as Duracell and Energizer can fry the CPU and I should stick with cheap dollar store batteries, rechargeable batteries, or the Power Back. Is this true? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

AFAIK there's a voltage regulator inside the GG, so I suspect there's no chance that a battery can 'fry' your chips.

That is complete nonsense. Only problem that can happen is when you leave batteries in the machine and stick it in storage. Cheap batteries tend to leak over time and that will destroy any nearby metal parts. More expensive batteries are less likely to fail in such manner in storage.

Duracell and Energizer? Those are probably the top two brands in the US. Nonsense they'd release console likely to be damaged by the most common name-brand batteries. :P
