What are the official (i.e. Sega's) names for this machines? I always thought they were SG-1000, SG-1000 II and Mark III, but in Wikipedia (and other web pages) they are called SG-1000 Mark I, SG-1000 Mark II and SG-1000 Mark III. Are this names really correct?

What are the differences between SG-1000 and SG-1000 II? And between the Mark III and the european/american Master System?

The SG-1000 Mark II looks a lot like a Mark III (see Wikipedia) - the Mark II was a remodelled serious-looking SG-1000 with the ability to plug in a keyboard and make it a "computer" by running BASIC, etc. The Mark III was a beefed-up Mark II with new graphical capabilities, more RAM and supporting the FM Unit as well. The Master System was a cut-down Mark III, removing the keyboard capability.

It's worth remembering that the Japanese Master System came out some time after the export version, so you can consider the latter as coming in between the two evolution-wise. Also note that SG-1000 cartridges are compatible with the Japanese SMS cartridge slot, allowing the backwards compatibility to be used; the capability was there in the export SMS but blocked by the cartridge slot change and the BIOS checks.

The original SG-1000 can also be connected to the SK-1100, not just the SG-1000 II. They just moved the expansion port from the back to the front.
The only real differences are cosmetic (aside from the original model having a hard-wired SJ-200 controller rather than the pair of detachable SJ-150's that were packaged with the SG-1000 II).

And, as far as I know, your original names were correct - SG-1000 / SG-1000 II / Mark III
