Hi,
I am following your adventures for quite some time and found a small contribution into your hunger for Sega information. As an old sega fanboy it means a lot to me that you keep the sms alive! For my profession I have to dig into some patent databases and happen to type "Sega" into a searchfield today.
At http//ep.espacenet.com/ I've found many patents for sega inventions. You can search by year and subject and found a patent from 1985 for a lightgun game system (it's not clear if it is the same as a SMS lightgun). But give it a try, it's free and maybe you'll find some nice stuff.

All the SMS game boxes have "PAT. PENDING" printed on the inside, I wondered, if they ever got this patent (and a nr.) and what the patent was about in the first place. I couldn't find anything neither on patens.google.com nor ep.espacenet.com
I found a lot of other things, though: a patent for a light gun game system, several memory schemes (!) and so on.
Does anybody know something about the box patent?
