Master system problem?
Post Posted: Tue Mar 14, 2017 5:51 pm
Hi guys . Hope you all been doing well.
I've been playing my master system on a daily basis since I got it.
Recently it started with some weird stuff like , I'm playing a game and sometimes the picture goes off and on all this in a fraction of a second. It doesn't affect anything gameplay and sound everything goes as normal and the console seems to function well except for that .
The effect is as you were disconnecting the rf on and off pretty quick or maybe as if you were disconnecting the console on and off fast enough without causing the system to restart. It's weird but thought I'd ask. I'm no expert at this and maybe I should treat this as normal as these consoles are more than 20 years old.
I'm using the original Sega ac adapter and rf direct cable. Tv is flat screen.
Any help is appreciated and thank you .

If it helps to troubleshoot this problem , I used the same ac adapter and rf cable on my mega drive and didn't do anything so it must be console related.

On the mega drive nothing happens , as for the cable the image is clear and pretty good , everything is stationary and this is what puzzles me why the master system is doing such a thing.

It happens least once every time I'm using the master.
Never happened twice over the same time I think but I might test that out .
Maybe it's just the master system heating up , a component or something , I havent got a clue is just plain weird.

I would gladly make a video for you guys to see it but thing is , this doesn't follow any pattern , youre just sitting playing your games and image goes off and on all of a sudden for a fraction of a second and everything keeps going as normal .

I think you have a faulty capacitor at composite vídeo line.
Post a image of your board near AV port if you do not know where is this capacitor and we can point.

Hi Neto.
You're probably right.
Everything works well with the console it just does that with the picture once when the consoles on.
And as the console is powering and till it builds energy maybe it's that capacitor that's causing the image to switch off and back on real quick.
Think that after that you can play it for hours and won't happen again.

Do you need me to remove the metal plate?
Hope this is not too hard I'm afraid of messing with these things and don't want to wreck it.
If this will need a new capacitor is it easy to replace it?
Thanks for your help.

Another thing that happens and maybe it'll help troubleshoot this :
When I turn the tv on and then the master system the image is always a bit fuzzy with grains so if I

1-retune it again with the tv then it's fine
or
2-if I take the rf cable out and then in again in the master system then the image is fine, this without retuning the tv.

It could be the tv because it's not crt but not sure this is a weird case but everything works fine.
I've been playing desert strike and so far the picture going on and off hasn't happened.

The PSG is built inside custom ASIC SEGA 315-5246

For video capacitor try replacing the capacitor marked as C38 ( 100uF ), I can´t read the code marked in PCB in the image, but appear to be the one located below RF terminals.

Hi Neto thanks for your reply.
You think it's the blue one below the rf terminal?
I'll have to open it again and check it does seem it has a 8 at the end there .

Yes.

Anything else that needs off to pull the board out?
And you mentioned a 100uF capacitor is needed , also what voltage is it? Any other info needed so I can buy the right one?
Obrigado pela tua ajuda Neto.

In this image I can see which you already have removed all other five screws, and not that ones which fixes cartridge slot. Removing them is sufficient to get board out.

100uF / 16V electrolytic capacitor, this is the original value used by SEGA.

Ok awesome!
I'll look for the right capacitor on ebay , other day was looking for one but didn't know which voltage was it.

Sim eu sou portugues :) Abraco e muito obrigado :)
