Does the color ram palette affect the colors in TMS9918A mode?

The SMS / Mark III palette for TMS9918A mode is quite a bit different from the real TMS9918A colors:
http://www.smspower.org/Development/Palette Are the SMS / Mark III colors hardwired or are these default values for the palette in color RAM? Emulators seem to disagree on their behaviour in TMS9918A mode. MAME Mark III: Uses hardwired Mark III palette, ignores color RAM MAME Jap SMS: Uses hardwired Mark III palette, ignores color RAM Kega: Uses hardwired TMS9918A palette, ignores color RAM Meka: Uses hardwired TMS9918A palette, ignores color RAM Emulicious: Uses hardwired Mark III palette, ignores color RAM MasterGear Jap SMS: Uses hardwired TMS9918A palette, ignores color RAM How does real hardware behave? Are there differences between Mark III, Jap. SMS, SMS, SMS 2? Philipp P.S.: Added Emulicious, Master Gear |

AFAIR it seems to me they're hardwired and not really faithful.

Only the Game Gear uses the palette, but that's not official (you need a loader to set it, to play SG games). The colours used seem consistent (and bad), my suspicion is that they were based on the documented names (dark red, etc) rather than a comparison. In reality, the TMS colours are actually impossible to replicate with 3 bit RGB, some even have the same closest match.
