Alex Kidd in Miracle World HD for HiSMS (was: About HiSMS)

Hi,
I've had recently discovered this "HiSMS" emulator (despite it was released back in 2009) - and I'm in love with it because it lets you to create high-definition hacks of Sega Master System games. I'm looking for some high-definition hacks but I've found nothing yet! Do you know if there's any HD hack created with HiSMS out there? I've just started an experiment with the first Alex Kidd game and so far it's all OK. I'm attaching a screenshot (this is a work in progress, many things will be retouched and some original graphics are still untouched). Hope you like it: |

I've seen a few such emulators over the years and very few good data packs - probably only N64 ones.

The lightning bolt looks a little weird to me, but everything else looks quite good.

Thanks! =) You're right about the thunder... I tried to add more detail but it's unnecessary. This is my updated (and probably final) title screen: |

The main reason that there aren't many hi-quality packs for such emulators is that making hi-res graphics is pretty hard work; few would have the necessary dedication. In the N64 this is less of an issue, because, due to the nature of 3D graphics, you don't have to remake every single animation frame of your main character: you could just redo the textures in high resolution, and everything would work out.
I'll be sincere: your title screen looks nice, but I'll only believe you're up to the task if you do the same thing to the main characters sprites. ;-) |

Thanks. I'm aware it's a hard task but I was expecting to see some HD modifications of small games like Teddy Boy or Ghost House out there anyway.
Thanks again! :) I don't want to sound rude - especially beacause I admire your work - but I'm not trying to prove anything to anyone. I'm just having fun. So far not even I am convinced that anything decent will come from this. Right now I'm changing the first stage backgrounds. Only after this I'll take care of the main sprites. All I have for now are some sketches of Alex in standing and jumping poses: |

After some weeks in silence I can finally show the first stage of my Alex Kidd modification. Hope you like it! :)

This is just incredible. Fantastic artwork and clearly a lot of effort went into the project. I'm very impressed! |

Thank you very much Charles! :) By the way I love to play SMS Plus on my Playstation 2. It's amazing to be complimented by someone such talented. |

Looks great, is there a lot of work besides creating the artwork?

You walk into the ghost and don't die, did you enable 'god' mode?

The ghost is not dangerous until it starts moving.

Thank you! My real work is basically recreate the art - I'm just a cartoonist / animator with no programming skills. You can check this tutorial and see for yourself it's very easy to create hi-res graphics with HiSMS: http://hisms.orgfree.com/tutorial/index.html
No =) You can always touch the ghost when he isn't moving. ==================================== By the way I'd love to thank Bock because he's indirectly helping me a lot with this project. I love Alex Kidd (it was the first 8-bit game I've played a lot when I was a kid) but only with info and reference images found here on SMS (maps, manual scans and even the photos of his Alex Kidd board game) this project could become reality. |

I agree with Charles - it looks excellent. I especially like the dragons! |

(Macbee, I'm innocent! Most of the contents on the Games pages such as scans, maps, are submitted by users. If you browse each page you can see a credits for who submitted what. Maxim is doing most of the maintenance work to keep those things organised. I'm merely working on cataloguing releases and rom dumps :)
At any rate it is great that all the contents can inspire you to work on this project. It looks like it would be interesting for other emulators to support the HiSMS data files as welll. |

Thanks Paul! I was in doubt about the dragon's colors because they're greenish in the original game - but sometimes they're drawn with red skin (like in the japanese cover). So I created a mix of all dragon images I've seen so far. Studying all different character designs and blend them into new models is probably my favorite part of this project.
OK, you're half-guilty then! :)
Yes, I'd love to see other emulators compatible with this Hi-res feature. HiSMS is amazing but I'm afraid it will never receive an update -- and it needs updates. Alex Kidd runs well but many other games have problems. It's usual to see scrolling bugs and games that freezes over and over in the same points. Many games (like Tec Toy ones) simply doesn't work. I'd like to modify Brazilian titles like "Sitio do Pica Pau Amarelo" (despite all its flaws) because I was a huge fan of the 70s TV show - but right now it's impossible. I also would like to see my Alex Kidd HD project running with PSG sound (or even to replace music and sounds with .wav files) - but once again there's no way to do this in HiSMS. I love pixel art and 8-bit graphics but I also believe these high-resolution hacks are welcome. They will never replace the classic titles - In fact I guess they'll be just a nice excuse to old fans (like us) finish our favorite games once again - and to introduce 8-bit gaming to today's kids. |
