There are two standard ways to store data larger than 8 bits: either to store it so the most significant bytes come first, or so they come last:

Both methods have advantages and disadvantages.
The Z80 is a little-endian CPU. That means that:
hl, the most significant byte is in h and the least significant in l (think: high, low)
