Building a mapper

Is there any place where I can find some information/instructions on building a mapper for SMS cartridges? I would like to make a mapper instead of using one from an original cartridge. Maybe using some logic chips or a microcontroller?

We can certainly provide information on the functionality needed; but I don't know of anyone who has successfully made a homebrew mapper.
