That's partially "false", a real game gear (VA1) must be sacrified for this as you'll always need the 315-xxx chip and the cartridge port (at least).
And not a real "reverse engineering thing", but more a huge routing time in fact.

Indeed - the ASIC, cartridge connector and Gear to Gear port are the only parts from an original system because none of them have modern counterparts.
