NTSC compatibility

Hi everybody,
I successfully did the PAL/NTSC-Mod on my PAL-SMS1 and I am fond of the bigger picture and faster music. But alas my favorite game Xenon 2 seems not to be compatible, it shows ugly fragments which even act as obstacles to the ship. This also occurs using the [UE] signed Virgin version. Does there exists another US/NTSC version or a patch? It would be just a pity if not because the game obviously profits from 60hz. In PAL-Mode the music slows down if there are too many sprites on the screen, in NTSC-Mode everything runs smoothly. Many regards, Mork |

No, some games are not compatible and not easy to make compatible. In fact games that slow down at 50Hz are likely to slow down just as much if not more at 60Hz as there is less time per frame for them to do their stuff.

So Xenon 2 was never published in the US?

That's correct. This site can be a useful resource; if accurate, it was only ever published in PAL regions:

Xenon 2 is a 1992 game, that's too late for the US. I think even in 1990, US releases started to slow down as Sega was pushing the Genesis while they had time to capitalize on the SNES' delayed release. I think 1991 only got the four(?) games which were European imports (the most famous game Sonic 1, the "$1200 for a sticker" game). The SMS was completely discontinued after that. (So even Sonic 2 was only released contemporaneously in Japan and the USA as the infamously compromised GG port.) |
