Tags proposal : Original Game, SMS original, SMS Exclusive (?)

I'd like to propose creating a tag to denote games that designed specifically for the console, or initially released for the console. Not arcade or computer ports, not back-port from 16-bit console, etc.
They are often games that are unique to the console. Occasionally those games may exist in other versions but the Sega 8-bit version would be the original one. Example of such games: - Alf - Alex Kidd in Miracle World - Asterix - Aztec Adventure - Black Belt - Fire & Forget II (SMS version is actually the first version of the game!) - Out Run 3D - Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap - Zillion Some more arguable cases that I would personally want to include in the tag: - Sonic The Hedgehog (even though this is an adaptation of the MD game, the game was sufficiently redesigned and re-adapted into its own game that I would consider it a new game) - Psycho Fox (followup on Kid Cool, but sufficiently redesigned) - Golden Axe Warrior (highly inspired from Zelda 1, but still an original game) Question: how shall we call this Tag? My top candidate are: "Original Game" and "Sega 8-bit Original". While we settle on a Tag if you are interested you can start writing down the list it (perhaps include game that needs to be debated). Some need some research? |

Hi, I think we could link this to this topic
http://www.smspower.org/forums/12155-Tags (Wed Apr 12, 2017) And we can start from the list of wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Master_System-only_games It could be a good tag (My candidate was "Master System Exclusive") |

I like the "Sega 8-bit Original" the most. | |

The thing with "SMS exclusive" is that what to we do with the many games that are on both SMS and GG? e.g. Wonder Boy III. Either the tag definition makes us ignore many games, either the tag becomes misleading. This is why I suggested "Sega 8-bit original" as a way to embody the familial aspect cover all those machines.
For me the valuable property of this tag is to isolate games whose creation benefited from the design flexibility/freedom coming with creating something with no existing references and requirements. In my opinion many of the best games lies in this category. I think several games will need to be debated, so I suggest someone can try posting a list here and other can review it. (Will merge the topics once this is settled, thanks!) *EDIT* If we want we could _also_ add the strict "Master System Exclusive" tags (excluding games that are on both SMS-GG). |

Wonder Boy III was ported to GG so it was SMS first - but not exclusive. There's utility in both concepts - exclusives are a subset of originals. I think the modern usage of "Amazon Original", "Netflix Original" is a good fit, so I propose we have either "Sega 8-bit Original" or "SMS Original", etc, and also the corresponding "Exclusive" tags for those games never ported elsewhere.
Personally I think the system specific tags are better. |
