VGM2MIDI for OS X
Post Posted: Sun Apr 03, 2016 3:38 am
Hello,

I am spending a lot of time trying to get a VGM to MIDI exporter for my iMac which uses OS X 10.11 and so far, I am getting nowhere. I could try developing one, but I cannot even open the vgm2midi.exe unless I download virtual box purchase a CD of Windows XP, which I do not want to do. Can anybody help me out so I can get some good directions on what to do.

Josh

Hi Josh,

It looks like vgm2midi is a C# program so you might be able to run it with mono on OSX.

http://www.mono-project.com/docs/about-mono/supported-platforms/osx/

Their website says it requires .NET framework 2.0 which seems to be well supported by the mono project. :)

Curiosity got the better of me and I tried it out. :)

It seems to work ok for me.

$ mono Vgm2Midi.exe monkey_lad_title_screen.vgm

Vgm2Midi - Ben Ryves 2006

Done!

I couldn't get the resulting mid file to play with VLC though. :(

Thanks! It worked! The only issue is that it only exports the 4 PGS channels and not the other 6 FM channels, but that's fine for now. I am focused on 16-bit, not 8-bit. I can now use Logic Pro X to create the rest of the midi.

By the way, I did not know that a .vgm is used for both the SMS and SMD! I though that was a .gym. I feel that spending my money for the mighty and powerful F-MDrive 2612 virtual Genesis synth by AlyJames Lab inc. might be the only way to solve the rest of the issue. It actually works along with Audio Workstations, which is a plus. Also on the good side, it will be released for OS X in the future along with another side program for the 4 PSG channels.

The main reason and I am doing all this work is because I love Rocket Knight Adventures (for Sega Genesis obviously) because of the amazing soundtrack and there are only 3 available MIDI files out of the 22 possible themes that can be made.

I'll go off topic for a second just to say that I agree with you, some of those songs are fantastic and it's a shame there are no MIDIs available aside from the 3 you mentioned.

As for the gaming systems supported by the VGM format, well...
