Tectoy sms1 NTSC conversion
Post Posted: Fri Jan 08, 2016 9:59 pm
Hello! I'm modding my old Tectoy sms version 1 (pal M from origin) to NTSC. I've added a 60hz switch, and locked the MC1377 encoder to ntsc (pin 20 to ground), it works faster and the tv detects it at ntsc, but the screen displays with mismatched colors. The XTAL says 10,746168. I'm missing something?
Thanks so much for the help!

Both PAL-M and NTSC are 60Hz, so games shouldn't be running any faster. A PAL-M console in an NTSC TV (and vice-versa) runs fine, but with mismatched colors (or in black and white).

I too am interest in converting my consoles to NTSC, but I have no idea what the proper steps are.

if I am not wrong the XTAL value must be 10.7386 for NTSC and 10.726834 for PAL-M.

Yeah, I think that's the xtal too. Impossible to find here a 10.7386 :(, do I have another exit if I can't find one crystal of the exact value? thank you all so much!

Another solution is using an external crystal to get NTSC subcarrier for use with MC1377P, in this case you can use common NTSC crystal of 3,579545. This mode will work bettert with S-Vídeo Mod.

Edit: The schematic in attachmmnet is for PAL-M but will work in the same way in NTSC mode changing crystal and putting pin 20 at ground.

Try changing VR1 (100k variable resistor) position and check this component with a multimeter to see if it is not broken.

Edit: Did you removed the internal subcarrier signal coming from system?

Tried on another tv and worked :| thanks for the help!

Nope, I haven't removed anything but lifting off pin 17 and 18 from the mc1377p and injected the oscillator, it's necessary?

Ok, I don´t like lifting pins, but this should work.

An alternative for not lifting pins is removing C25 and C26 and placing your oscilator in location of C26.

Guys, I'm im the same boat here... I want to change my TecToy SMS (the model 3, compact, with Sony encoder) to work on NTSC.

Reason: I got a framemeister, but it works only with NTSC and european PAL signals. So, I have a black & white image.

If I buy a XTAL like this: (put the aliexpress. before) com/item/Semiconductor-vibration-10-7386-MHZ-into-crystals-HC-49-u-10-7386-M-environmental-quality-goods/32453183278.html

Will it work just replacing the XTAL?

Well, a fair update: Micomsoft replied me few minutes ago saying PAL-M support is already ready, just in debugging process and should be available in the next firmware update.
