Hi! Got some minor GameGear Problems!
Post Posted: Wed Apr 21, 2010 6:24 pm
Recently i tried to play on my GG again but was kinda shocked about the state it was in. The sound if turned the Volume is at 100%!! is barely hearable(but its there)! Also the Top 1cm of the screen doesnt have a Picture. The backlighting there works though:( I was already able to fix the Power Problems i had by soldering a new AC connector!

Anyone got an idea about which parts to take a look at inside of the GG?

Greetings!

This is a common problem with old Game Gears, as their capacitors will leak. Look here to learn more about it.

Not leaking doesn't mean not defective. It's likely to be fixed if you replace more/all capacitors.

It looks like all caps are replaced, you seem to have a 1 ASIC board and they have twelve caps on the main board and five on the sound board that should be replaced.( source: http://members.optusnet.com.au/eviltim/ggrgb/ggrepair.html )

Do a double check so that all caps are properly connected to the board, if they are... Perhaps someone else has an idea.

If you have a spare GG which powers, try to use its power board instead of your modified one, perhaps you've made mistakes on it.

Also, try to clean the board with isopropyl alcohol (I did on a dead game gear with a toothbrush, and now it powers!).

Viletim could help you more, try PM him if he doesn't reply here =P

About the missing screen, if you very gently push against the ribbon cable going from the GG PCB to the screen does it appear? Does the cable appear loose where it attaches to the PCB at any point?

For those who lack soldering experience, there are a few sellers on eBay who sell refurbished GGs with all the caps replaced. Some even offer a service where you can send your old GG in and they'll repair it for you.

Peak Envolope Power xD sorry im a radio nut as a few people would know around here.

I have also had a GG like this where I replaced all the caps and it never worked properly so I just stole the caps I couldn't find from it (I had replaced them already) and put them into a known working GG which I later got paid for with a rather large sum of money!

In the end its sometimes easier to just get another GG and go from there :)

Or do what I did to a spare GG using one of Viletims Video boards. It had a partially dead screen, so I ripped the bitch out and made it like so.
