Game Gear save battery type?
Post Posted: Sun Feb 26, 2017 5:29 pm
I have a copy of Magical Puzzle Popils on the Game Gear that won't hold saves for very long, so I thought it might be the save battery. When I opened up the cart the battery was mounted upside down (so I couldn't read the type) and the tabs were 90 degrees from each other (not straight across like on a Game Boy cart). Does anyone know where I could find a decent replacement?

It should be attached to the post. A bit off topic, but how many posts do you have to make before you're allowed to post images and links and stuff?

Five or so - but we prefer attachments anyway, they don't go bad.

Turns out that it's a CR2032. I only have the through-hole variety, but I made it work. You (as in, whoever finds this in a few years on Google) may have to do the same thing, as I don't know of any other device that has the pads like the Game Gear.

Should Game Gear games operate with a dead battery? I just got a copy of Shining Force Gaiden 2 which doesn't seem to work. Cleaned the contacts but no luck so far.

The battery is only to keep saves when powered off, a dead battery will just cause the saves to become blank every time you power off.

That's what I thought. Thanks for confirming.

This is assuming the battery hasn't leaked. To my knowledge though, the button style batteries used in cartridges don't leak. Might be worth dismantling it and finding out though.
