Bare Knuckle ~ Streets of Rage (World) V0.2 GG2SMS

- Optimised Conversion, all seems working fine, no error garbage in game and enemies fight hard ;)
- No Work in real hardware (Yes at MegaDrive), no all gg ports are deleted
- Thankyou Calindro for Emulicious
- Is a dream to implement 2 players support..?

Yes I can, but like v0.1 there will be garbage in title screen if you don't pass the text introduction quickly. Also you didn't active the left column blank in your version.

I will release v0.2a later.

With Codemasters games,anybody knows how to enable codemaster mapper at everdrive
Calindro share a link but I don't understand all in it. CM Checksum is at $bff0???? How calculate it??

I don't understand what you're trying to say...

In the future please be careful with update, when making an update it's best to use the last version. Your version of Bare Knuckle was full of GG ports, pause button was crashing the game and no LCB active...

It's awesome what have done BcnAbel76 and Revo porting these games and something came to my mind, could the sprites be rendered outside the game gear screen resolution by ram hacking? it is a theory, if you think this would work then I will try using cheat engine.

Sprites and Background need to move, for now I can only move background, sprites would store data position itselves, then it's needed to move all sprite ram, maybe posible to add this routine but really no problem to write outside GG resolution
General sprites are $30 pixels moved, you need to subtract it, if sprites move then it can implemented with code hacking in some games

@Revo:

English is not my native language.

Sorry but when a game does not work correct or an update will affect game, for restore it, I need back last operative version, in your Bare Knuckle conversion v0.1, a game bug is detected, then I need back to 0.0, the original version.

Really I think GG ports were removed, maybe I forget some
My objective in 0.2 was game works properly, you can add then rest Improvements

Here it is. My Gunstar Heroes GG2SMS patch. I hope you all like it.


  • There are two versions: one with a normal palette tweaked to show all the pixel art details in the SMS, and one that uses the 3D glasses to expand the SMS perceived palette to 216 colors, thus making the colors closer to the original GG game
  • Removed a software lock that caused trouble to run the game on the Master Everdrive
  • Garbage was removed from nearly all screens
  • Enabled the left column masking
  • The PAUSE button now works properly and doesn't crash the game
  • Button-1 of the 1st joypad now acts as START when needed.
  • Moved the text speedup to the 2nd button.
  • The 2nd joypad has SELECT on its button-1, and PAUSE on its button-2.
  • Megadrive joypad support. When one is used, the C button acts as SELECT and the START button will pause the game accordingly, and act as START button where needed. There's no need to use two joypads anymore
  • Enlarged screen area.
  • The Sega logo screen now can be skipped


But the patch is far from finished and still has some known glitches:


  • Some elements have an offset when compared to the background. Specially the hitboxes of the houses in the 1st stage and their smoke after they explode, and the plant boss.
  • Some graphical glitches still occur at some specific points in some stages, notably on the pyramid of the 1st stage, and the areas when you're almost reaching some bosses
  • The larger screen area makes some enemies appear imediately in some areas, like in the 1st screen of the 1st stage, and in the 1st screen of the airship stage.


Due to the persistence of vision, the 216 colors trick also works without the 3D glasses, but some flickering will be noticed.

- When you see the 2nd screen after starting a game, press start quickly, if not the game reset.
- Garbage screen in-game but not during combat.
- It seems like if you die, the game freeze, so you will have to be good!

Sounds like this should be fixed before release. People can be good but not *that* good :-)

Just an FYI: The game is called "S.S. Lucifer: Man Overboard!", but it's listed in the SMS Power database as "Man Overboard". This doesn't effect anything, but if you look for it in the hacks section, check under "M", not "S".

Maxim, is there any reason it's listed like that? Any cool story behind it, or that's just the way it was set up?

Not really - usually we go with title screen text (as it is more the programmer's will than the box cover) but in this case maybe we didn't pay so much attention.

I have tested it on real hardware with a donor cartridge and the game has a BACKUP ERROR message after Sega logo.

- This game no enter in pause mode because it is needed to push Start+1+2 in original, but in hacking for now not possible (next update will take this option)

You need a cartridge with 16kb SRAM to store backup data.
All games with savedata option are storing it with this file size.
No problem with everdrives but yes with standard cartridges.

What was the problem with Pop Breaker?

In True Lies you can use button 1 in-game to move the character without moving the gun.

Pop Breaker V1.1 is not working in Master System real hardware, many gg ports remanents are present in patched rom.
It should work in Megadrive/Genesis but not in Master System.

V1.2 is working fine in all hardware

CCovell did a great conversions !!!

Um, this is not true. I think Pop Breaker was the only conversion where I might have not been aware of the phantom ports. (But it still did work on real SMS hardware; I tested it.)

If you have port fixes for my other conversions, please point out with code locations where I missed them.

Pop Breaker was one of my first cartmodding, I did a little hack on the Title Screen with Vingazole help (at the time I was not knowing anything about GG2SMS conversion or GG ports).

About Magic Knight Rayearth 2 Title Screen, I think it look better if we change the black and grey by blue $10.

Wow, so I did miss those (the latter 2 port writes). Sorry. I guess at the time I oddly didn't catch "out(c),a" style instructions. :(
