1990 Titus European Release Schedule (Dated 13/06/90)

Planned SMS releases;

Sep 90: Fire & Forget 2
Dec 90: Combat Boy
Dec 90: Crazy Bikes
Mar 91: Crazy Cars 3

I don't think Combat Boy or Crazy bikes got released for any systems, not under those names at least. Crazy Cars 3 did see a release on various home computers though.

"Battle zone"?
3D vector game, developed by Japanese enthusiasts in the 80s or 90s. There used to be a page where a game ROM could be downloaded, but it's no longer available after the host introduced a spiders.txt forbidding Archive.org.

Where did you hear about it? Any more information? Do you suggest it would be for Mark III ? I'd be surprised there was ever a ROM released and we wouldn't have heard about it.

*EDIT* Googling for 'http://member.nifty.ne.jp/Mukai/SEGAGAME.htm' seems to give a little more information. A guy called 'Sage' said it is a port from the Sword M5 to the SC-3000/MarkIII (confusing) and posted a link. idrougge: you were given the link in 2004, what was on the page then? Have you played a game?

ISTR it was for Mark III, but it could very well have been SC-3000. I never downloaded the game, and when I was to do it some time later, the page was no longer available at archive.org. I do remember the page somewhat, it detailed the hardships in development (in the time before emulators) and had a screenshot. It was wireframe or vector graphics.

I read about this game on the digitpress forums a few years back, I tried to find it myself with no luck. It doesn't seem to have ever made it onto the various rom sites or in any downloadable 'fullset rom packs', nobody seems to have it!

Huh, haven't heard of this. It's interesting to see Japanese info.

We're well aware several games have evidence in the rom. FM soundtracks, text script, alternate title...
But whether they were announced in any capacity I don't know.

Shmuplations has translated an old interview about Phantasy Star II which mentions the scrapped Mark III version:
Quote
Phantasy Star II was originally planned for the Sega Master System, as a direct sequel to Phantasy Star. Later it was decided it would be released on the Megadrive, so we had to rework all our plans.

Quote
Wasn’t there also a hidden item called “Master System”? It was probably a vestigial reminder that Phantasy Star II was originally planned for the Master System.

It's almost certainly the NES one, all known screenshots of this game marketed for the Master System are from the NES and if you figure out the resolution of the graphics they'll probably be wrong.

That does look like the SMS.

If you compare the status, it does like sufficiently vertically compressed to account for the SMS' 192 lines compared to the NES 224 (well, technically it is always 240 but NTSC games assumed overscan)

(192 is 24 tiles high, 224/240 is 28 and 30 tiles respectively)

Good call. The screenshots earlier in the thread seem to be 192 lines/24 rows too.The lazy graphics conversion seems to have confused people, but the lowercase text and white menu text seems to be a key difference too.

The Japànese Game Gear box had screenshots of Master System games such as Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Cyberball and After Burner.

I guess they were there to advertise Master System compatibility. But is there any chance that a Game Gear release for these games were planned?

Cyberball is a Mega Drive game, which the screen shots seem to be of too. I don't think Sega ever officially supported Master System compatibility, the converters were made by third parties, although maybe released as official products overseas. Moonwalker is also on the box.

Anyway, here's the release schedule just after GG JP release, although maybe discussion of this would be more suited in this thread. I think I can make out Alex Kidd at least.

I can see Psycho World (Psychic World) and... Fantasy Zone 3 (Fantasy Zone Gear, I guess?).

EDIT: Oh, there's also Alien Storm and Golden Axe above and below Alex Kidd, respectively.

Ganma Genki
Post Posted: Tue Jul 22, 2014 7:48 pm
I finally found out what "Ganma" by "Genki" is. The Japanese letters that translate to "Ganma" also mean the much more common word "Gamma". "Gamma" is the boss of the 1991 "Genki" GG game "Devilish". It looks like they planned a less offensive title, then changed it.

Interesting. The most recent catalogue from 1994/01 doesn't feature California Games II either (it's one of six known games to release after), so I'd keep an open mind about Power Strike II possibly getting released in Korea in small numbers.

Great interview, it's worth reading the whole thing.

Quote
Sega-16: Arena: Maze of Death on the Game Gear is a pretty unique title on the game gear. How did the idea to develop it come about?

Stuart Middleton: If I remember right, the idea came from myself and one of our employees Jason Evans. I don’t remember what sparked the original idea, but it was probably based on what we were playing at the time (I’ve asked Jase if he remembers).

Sega-16: Was it difficult to create an isometric action game on the Game Gear? Did the hardware present any particular difficulties?

Stuart Middleton: I do remember having issues with the isometric view. The obvious character mapped graphics of the Master System make an isometric views difficult. One of our artists, Jason Evans, came up with some great ideas on how to overcome these problems. We built walls from repeating sections and used the art style of leaving sections out of the walls and floors to reduce the need to join sections together. We had the game working on Game Gear and Master System, but they only wanted the Game Gear version. Sega were very happy with the results, and we were very proud of what we accomplished.

Just to add a note that while researching in old gaming magazines trying to find a UK release date for Donald Duck The Lucky Dime Caper on SMS (at this point my best estimate is either December 1991 or January 1992), it's become pretty clear to me the game was originally called DuckTales.

Both Sega Power #25 (cover date December 1991) on p11 and Sega Pro #1 (cover date November 1991) on p9 list "DuckTales" on SMS as due November 1991. Then in Sega Pro #2 (cover date December 1991) on p7 it says "Donald Duck" on SMS is due December 1991. Then in Sega Pro #3 (cover date Christmas 1991) p24 it says "Donald Duck" on SMS is due "before Christmas [1991]". Then in Sega Pro #4 (cover date February 1992) on p30/31 they review "Donald Duck The Lucky Dime Caper" on SMS and say it's out now. Pretty clear evidence in these consecutive issues of it being the same game simply evolving. Plus several other gaming magazines review the Lucky Dime Caper around this time as well (many are listed on the SegaRetro page in the reviews box)

In my view it's very unlikely there would be two Disney games on SMS due for release so close together, plus The Lucky Dime Caper includes several DuckTales characters in the story/intro so it's not much of a leap at all. In my view this is more than enough evidence to show DuckTales on SMS is just the original title for The Lucky Dime Caper and it was never a separate game.

Would also make sense to change the name, considering that Scrooge, Huey, Dewey, and Louie are not the main playable characters.

If Scrooge McDuck was to be playable at one time, as the main character, then the DuckTales name would make sense. I mean, Magica De Spell is the main character, and she was known to be after Scrooge's Number One Dime not only because she believed it would give her riches on the level of Scrooge, but it was said it could restore her brother, Poe de Spell, back to his old anthro duck self.

The intro even features some actual sprites for Scrooge, so that wouldn't be such a farfetched idea.

You know I wouldn't be surprised if Ni****do had something to do with the name change, because of the NES game DuckTales which was released a year or two earlier. Obviously it's not the exact same game but Ni****do were well known to have a preference/demand for exclusivity deals with game publishers (particularly in the early days) and probably didn't like the idea of Sega "stealing" their game series or leeching off the reputation of the NES DuckTales game. I bet that's why it was retitled The Lucky Dime Caper Starring Donald Duck.

In regard to Bluestreak and ICEknight's comments - while it's certainly a logical idea to theorize that perhaps Donald was not the main character at some point in the game's development, personally I don't think this was the case, as I seem to remember reading in some Sega Power issues "news" sections that "a Donald Duck game" was in the early stages of development or was shown briefly at some industry event - and this was WAYY before the game was reviewed, previewed or any screenshots were printed. Unfortunately I didn't make a note of the issue or page number.

So although the evidence points to the game originally being called DuckTales, I don't think there is any evidence to suggest Donald was ever not present or not the main character.

I've heard different things about the extent to that licensing monopoly, but from what I understand at most they would've prevented Capcom from making a DuckTales game for any other console.
At that point I don't think Disney themselves were a console game company, and as such no direct licensing relation with Ni****do. (though Disney themselves made a different DuckTales game for computers, such as DOS)

This thread mentions Koronis Rift, "that was planned for a MyCard release. Has been released on MSX2." The Mark III section of a 1986 issue of Famitsu features this game "コロニスリフト" in the upcoming releases section at the end. Can anyone read what it says about the title?

The name is Koronis Rift, apparently it was released in Japan on MSX, a port from the western C64 release.

3D vector game, developed by Japanese enthusiasts in the 80s or 90s. There used to be a page where a game ROM could be downloaded, but it's no longer available after the host introduced a spiders.txt forbidding Archive.org.

http://web.archive.org/web/20000229063038/http://member.nifty.ne.jp/Mukai/SEGAGA...

I feel silly for forgetting about this, but archive dropped the spiders.txt thing a few years ago due to many cyber squatters using spiders.txt which blocked many old sites which had nothing to do with the current domain holders.

Anyway, this page and the ROM can now be accessed again.

It seems a bit buggy on my setup at least.

Wow. This is quite an impressive find. I think it deserve its own thread.

*EDIT* for those not reading the japanese page: game needs both 1+2 buttons pressed to start.

Go for it! Make a news page or something, I was pretty excited when the file download still worked, which is something that is quite often broken on old archive.org pages.

"Battle zone"?
3D vector game, developed by Japanese enthusiasts in the 80s or 90s. There used to be a page where a game ROM could be downloaded, but it's no longer available after the host introduced a spiders.txt forbidding Archive.org.

Revo showed a gameplay of this. And I heard that this was a port from Sord M5 to the Sega 8-bit systems. Heh, if it's that possible to do that type of conversion, MAN! I'm gonna convert Power Pac to Sega!

I was looking for information about Rieko Kodama's involvement in one of the Zillion games (she's mentioned the title several times but I don't know which episode she worked on. If you have any info...) and I found this tweet from Izuho Numata, AKA Ippo, a composer who joined Sega in early 1988 or so.:

a Zillion gun game for Master System. It was my first original song after joining the company, so I was surprised that it was cancelled even though it was already finished. I was surprised at that time.
By the way, I used Funky K.H.'s voice for the voice in the game.
