Phantasy Star Translation - FM Sound hack not working

I'm using the latest version of Retroarch on Mac OS X with the Genesis Plus GX core (also tried with the PicoDrive core) and when I hit the pause button on the title screen of the Phantasy Star translation rom, the game goes silent. If I press start again, I hear the non-FM music. If I start the game while it's silent, I get absolutely no sound. When I launch the original Japanese Phantasy Star rom, the FM sound works just fine. Is there something I can do to make the FM sound in this translation work? This is version 1.02 I'm using.

I know this thread is old but i had the same issue, I solved it by editing the retroarch-core-options.cfg file found in configs/all
Find the line that says
genesis_plus_gx_ym2413 = "auto"
and change the auto to enabled like so
genesis_plus_gx_ym2413 = "enabled"
Save the changes and reload the rom and both soundtracks works and can be switched with the pause button as they should.
Hopefully this helps and maybe helps anyone else who runs into this issue
