Sega AI Computer & Software!

About ten years after the last time one was auctionned, I have managed to acquire a SEGA AI Computer (セガ Aiコンピューター) and 12 software.

The Sega AI Computer is extremely rare and unknown to the point that it isn't clear if it was actually properly released. It was announced in 1986 and share some "vibe" similarities with the Sega Mark III era. My understanding is that was tested or sold to schools. I don't know if school was the test market, what was the intent, if many schools got it?

The software comes on card format that looks strikingly similar to Mark III / Master System cards. Otherwise very little is unknown. The software are dated 1988.

The system specs are advertised as: (copying data from SukaSega)
CPU : 16bit V20 (based on 8088)
ROM : 128KB OS.with SEGA PROLOG
RAM : 128KB
VRAM : 64KB
Video : V9938 Resolution 256x212
Sound : SN76489
Cassette Drive : 9600bps
TV Output : RGB, Video, RF
Keyboard : new JIS arrangement (Japanese input mapping)

It cost about $1700 to get the system with 9 cards. 1 card auction was lost to another bidder in an attempt of taming bids. 3 more cards are being sold next week for an estimated price of $200 but the increased publicity may raise their price.

The software we found are educational aimed at kids. It is unknown if Sega developped other software or was what planned. The computer ROM apparently include a Prolog interpreter.

The system was acquired with the help of various donations I have collected yesterday. And in particular with the Game Preservation Society in Tokyo ( http://gamepres.org ). They will first receive the system and probably help in devising dumping hardware. I will keep you updated on the whereabouts of the system but it may take a while. At worse we can get scans and videos, at best we can dump the ROM and software and it may lead to emulators.

Yes I let him have it (see above "in an attempt of taming bids", he wanted to bid on software so prefer to avoid bidding wars). He'll lend it to us.

Very nice, looks like it was made around the same time as the Mark II or Mark III!

It looks like fun to play, especially interested in seeing Mozart. Curious to hear what it sounds like, is the sound chip SN76489A or SN76489AN I wonder!

Very nice congratulations :)

Two more software found (from the same seller), I got them.

Educational Software:
English Wonder School - Eigo de ohanashi (えいごわんだーすくーるー、えいごでおはなし): Folk & Fairy Tales

Interestingly this one comes with *two* mycards and *two* tapes. Presumably the tapes contains audio?

/me hopes tapes can be dumped with no problems (those are definitely more fragile than the cart)

My intuition is that those particular tapes are audio tapes and the software/data goes on the card.

Beep-Shop actually acquired a Sega AI earlier this month and what's where the video above got posted.

Attached pictures including close-up of a card.

GamePres.org now received the hardware/software that we bought.

The seller to have more of them, they posted a total of 4 Sega AI (that's including one we bought). One had the hardware manual and an unidentified tape that appears to come with the system. It's a shame we didn't get that lot. I wonder if they have more? Somebody has stumbled on a little treasure of a stock..

I have noted 6 serial numbers for the hardware so far

AI-7010 No 1001106
AI-7010 No 1003526
AI-7010 No 1001103
AI-7010 No 1001322
AI-7010 No 1001632
AI-7010 No 1002765
AI-7010 No 1003962

And 4 serial number for Sega AI Sound Box

AI-2002 Soundbox: No 1002260
AI-2002 Soundbox: No 1002205
AI-2002 Soundbox: No 1002102
AI-2002 Soundbox: No 1002143 (this one I already owned)
AI-2002 Soundbox: No 1001067

It could mean that at least 3500 units were made, or maybe if the serial number is split (1001-xxx first revision, 1002-xxx soundbox, 1003-xxx different revision?) which is possible given the pattern here.

I have some news that Gamepres managed to extra data from the cards, so everything could potentially already be dumped. Joseph from Gamepres is travelling a lot so it is hard to get reliable infos and progress but apparently we could have something soon.

Darn, that's exciting !
Spotted one loose on ebay last week, wondering if the japanese guy just bought a warehouse with all the SEGA AI produced that never got to store shelves lying in it.

I think 4 units were sold in the past few months. There's one on eBay that the user bought from the Japan auction and trying to sell back. Classic greedy. It's a shame because it is in London and I'd really like to be able just to scan the manual from the seller wouldn't let me borrow it.

News

- Chris Covell has been doing amazing work with dumping all the computer data (total of 5 roms), all the software and reverse engineering the hardware specs. etabeta and jdg of MESS are working on emulating it.

- The original purchaser of the 15th software (and 17th card) "Cosmic Train" was kind enough to sell it back to me. So it is now also dumped.

- There is a software called 絵日記 (graphic/visual diary) that we haven't got, haven't got the manual nor the keyboard either.

Great progress. The Sega Pico seems like a successor to this in many ways.

From "Electronics"; July 24, 1986 via Google Books;

Quote
CHILDREN'S COMPUTER BRINGS AI INTO THE HOME

TOKYO Recent advances in logic-programming languages and processor and peripheral chips are making artificial-intelligence applications practical in the low-end home computer market. The first product that will seek to prove this point is the AI Computer, which Sega Enterprises Ltd. of Tokyo will start selling in Japan next month for $547.

The Sega AI Computer is built to run programs written in the Prolog AI language. It is strongly oriented toward computer-aided-instruction, especially for children, rather than the catchall hobbyist-to-professional target of other home computers. Perhaps its simplest AI application is a personal diary program that can be used two ways: in a simple word-processing mode for children with some writing facility and in a prompt mode.

In the prompt mode, the child is asked about his or her activities during the day and replies with one- and two-word answers. The computer program then writes a grammatically correct diary entry based on those replies. In more advanced CAI applications, the computer is more flexible than previous systems. It can parse a user's natural-language inputs and evaluate the person's ability level. It can then proceed to material of appropriate difficulty, rather than simply advancing one level at a time.

The success of the AI Computer will depend almost totally on the software available for it, and Sega has already forged ties with the educational community to develop courseware for 3- to 8- year-olds. Its partner in this endeavor is general trader Marubeni Corp.'s Visual Information Section, Corporate Develop ment Department, Tokyo, which is working with various educational organizations to create the programs.

Sega plans to work also with Linguaphone Institute (Japan) Ltd., Tokyo, to develop English-language instruction programs. Courseware in English should be ready next year, and the Sega AI machine then will be introduced in the U. S.

Rather than employing the Basic-language interpreters of most personal computers, Sega's AI machine uses a run-time Prolog-language interpreter residing in 128-K bytes of read-only memory. The Prolog interpreter is for running applications only — it cannot be used for programming. The company chose the Prolog AI language because of its ability to handle unformatted input and to parse natural-language input. Prolog is not especially suitable for driving displays and controlling peripherals, so Prolog functions call up fast, efficient assembly-language subroutines for these tasks.

ENHANCED MATH. Sega Prolog was developed jointly with CSKResearch Institute, the AI lab of software house Computer Services Corp., Tokyo. In addition to the assembly-language calls, the language's mathematical performance was enhanced for the AI Computer.

The computer's hardware is designed for high performance at low cost. It is built under contract by Nippon Gakki Co., Shizuoka, a leading maker of MSX- compatible computers and electronic musical instruments. The microprocessor is NEC Corp.'s V-20, an enhanced version of the Intel 8088 implemented in CMOS. The Prolog interpreter is stored in 128-K bytes of read-only memory, and main memory is 128K bytes of dynamic random-access memory. Video memory is 64-K bytes of DRAM, expandable to I28-K bytes. A Centronics compatible printer interface is standard. The system's power supply has sufficient capacity to run an optional 3 1/2-in. floppy-disk drive. The machine also comes with a tape recorder for digital input or natural-language audio output, and an eight-direction cursor controller.

The Sega Computer has a tablet on its sloping upper surface that takes overlays for various applications. One that will be used in many children's programs is a Japanese-language touchpad, which includes all phonetic-syllabary characters along with variations annotated with one of two standard marks. The technique was designed to meet the needs of young users, who might not be adept at using a traditional Japanese keyboard where the operator strikes character and mark-only keys in succession to obtain the desired syllable. For older children and adults, the computer also provides the new Japanese industrial-standard keyboard,, which fits on top of the tablet to save desk space. Applications programs are usually supplied as plug-in ROM cards with a capacity off up to 128-K bytes, although the built-in cassette tape recorder and optional 3 1/2-in floppy disk drive can also be used.

ROM versions of Basic and Logo are available for users who want to write programs in those languages. A I28-K RAM expansion kit and a I28-K RAM card are available for disk-based applications or languages that require extra memory.

-Charles L Cohen

Somebody sent me this ad from 1986.
Software is called "Kumon Wonderschool" (or it could be a serie) which doesn't match exactly the software we have.
And there is a screenshot of Alice's World.

The scan is from コぺル21 January 1987 issue (likely sold in December 1986).

Two tweets from the guy who scanned them

https://twitter.com/yoshimatsuTUQ/status/573105694284492800
「セガAIコンピュータ」と「くもんわんだぁすくーる」の関係がイマイチよく分からない。くもん~は当時のくもん出版から出ていた学習教材だが、AIコンピュータに他の用途があったのだろうか。

https://twitter.com/yoshimatsuTUQ/status/573106592045916160

Sorry no time to translate now. But the ads sells Kumon School as a package of 18 software for 168990 yens (~$1500 without adjustment for inflation).
It could be that the software we got as in fact this very package, or maybe not. I think Chris has access to a box carrying all the software and they may be more info there.

The magazine looks like コペル21 ("koperu", not "covell" ;-) )

Gokou is an OK transliteration, as is "Gokuu".

宝島 ワールド Takarajima World (Treasure Island) is more likely
ジャンヌ・ダルク
サファリ... (狩猟)?? (秘境)??

Thanks, fixed those above (Takarajima obviously..).

Next to Safari World is Space (宇宙)World so I suppose the kanji for Safari World mean something close to Safari. And neither 狩猟 nor 秘境 seem to match the strokes?

So, I have been and returned from Japan for various reasons and one of them was going to grab the Sega AI computer that has been sitting there forever. Chris kindly had stuff sent to a friend in Kyoto who I met with last week.

As it turns out, everything was much better/heavier than I expected, and I got worried that I wouldn't be able to safely transport it back to France but a lot of bubble wraps and mule friends helped that. It is now all at home and safe!

I will post better pictures later including the software packages (several of them, and they are rather big), but in the meanwhile here are some pictures that my friend Jake took (in the middle of some messy room in sweaty hot Kyoto).
