CES 1987 3D Glasses trade-only Ad with unknown 3D Glasses design

From TheRedEye
"Extremely rare trade-only ad for the Sega Master System's CES 1987 showing, highlighting its 3D glasses." "This is a two page spread in a giant tabloid-sized magazine, I had to composite four different scans together!" "I've got a nice stack of these on loan from @stevenplin. Steve's smart enough to recognize the importance of weird materials like these." Notice the hardware design. *EDIT* Posted higher-resolution scan: https://www.smspower.org/Scans/Sega-Advertisement-WedLikeYouToSeeThingsOurWay-US |

Cool! I've been after one of these for a while, I think it comes from this one;

That looks like a press kit that has a copy of the same ad. The particular ad I scanned is from a consumer electronics magazine called TWICE. |

Thanks for scanning. This must be from Winter CES, January 1987. According to Computer Entertainer (thanks for scanning those too!) the 3D glasses released August 1987, after originally getting announced at 1987 Winter CES for April 1987 release. Clearly they still had some refining to do.

That lot looks amazing too. Was it on eBay at some point?

Yeah, a lot of cool stuff in that lot, but it was expensive. Some other photos I saved from it.

Will do, I think this one was actually advertised either here or on the other forum.

Lost had to have been from a former dealer.
FWIW I encoded those VHS tapes too, they'll be online eventually. |

I rarely read the other forum unfortunately. |

That glasses design -- headband, wire coming from back of band, bridge over forehead, flat panes hanging over eyes -- is almost identical to the Famicom 3D glasses.
I've always had the feeling that the SMS and Fami 3D systems were sold to the co's from a 3rd party (Sharp, maybe?) and the cosmetic changes came later. (There's also the fact that you can use the Fami glasses on the SMS and vice-versa.) |

I've used the Sega 3D Glasses just fine as stereo glasses with a SimulEyes VR breakout box under a DOS computer and on modern stuff with Nvidia cards. So I think there's mostly a standard in how the glasses are wired. If you open the Sega 3D glasses up there is not circuitry, just some basic wiring to the LCDs. |

Cool thread, and beyond the Famicom, the Vectrex 3D Imager kinda fit like those too. The final design made the most (compact) sense.
