I guess I'd like to make the licencing of the retranslation more evil, and require people to publish their source if they derive from ours. It seems to me it would help others. Right now it is not licenced at all really.

WOW, just signed up to say this is EPIC. This is one of my all time favorite games and for about a year, I have been thinking about re-playing it from the start again.

This gives me a whole new reason to play this great game again !

You had reason, this bugs still are there. another thing. well i want to make a request, the team or the person, do the english translation, can add spanish characters like -> ¿ , á, é, í, ó, ú, ç.

i download the translation and i am trying to understand how i can make my own translation.

The game had a great bug, when you fight with any dragon of game, automatically, all team is death, the chest never seen, but is open, the team get the reward, and automatically the rom restart the game. this make impossible to finish the game, with the spanish patch.

There is very little space for more letters, it would require some enhancements to use mirrored tiles to free up some space. You can also reuse any unused letters in the script. Definitely something you need a coder for.

Greetings everybody. When we get at the Lashiec Castle Gardens, there are 5 houses. On american translation it goes like this: mute,speak,mute,speak, fight
Now, on the Sms Power translation, all first four houses got muted men...
and...those phrases that would be from them, later appears when we are surprised by Shadow.
These two phrases talks about that:
1 - Don't desobey Lord Lashiec
2- There's more to the eye in the cave

* Is there a bug? Or, was it a workaround for some other bug?

The japanese game is alright : the two old men speaks at 2nd and 4th houses at castle garden.
I got a save: save 1 is for checking these houses. Save 2 is just before Shadow appearance. At smspower version, just check the first two phrases he talks, these phrases belong two 2nd and 4th houses in the garden.[/quote]

Crashing on real hardware

I'm trying to make a physical version of this translation and I'm getting a strange problem where the game will freeze up and crash the very moment I enter a shop and attempt dialog with a shopkeeper. At the start of the game I can walk around and explore the first dungeon but as soon as I try to buy something the game will glitch out.

The patched Japanese ROM plays fine on an emulator but it will do this every time on my PAL Master System II which has been modded for 60 HZ.

To play on original hardware I'm using a new PCB with a custom paging chip and a M27C800 EPROM. I've tested the unmodified Japanese PS ROM on this PCB and it seems to be playing it fine without any glitches so I am a bit mystified as to what the problem could be.

I have an original Phantasy Star cartridge but I am reluctant to sacrifice it to see if it works on an original PCB, would much rather use all new parts if possible. Anyone got any ideas as to what might be going wrong?

try the patched ROM on Emulicious, with every possibile option activated (VRAM constraints on, stop on uninitialized RAM access, and so on...) and see if it crashes there the same way too. Hopefully it will.

It seems to be working fine in Emulicious, its also working in my mega everdrive running on a model 1 genesis. Is it then safe to assume that the patched ROM is normal and the issue here is the reproduction SMS PCB? I've read of successful physical copies using a donor cart with battery back-up so perhaps it is this custom paging chip that is some how incompatible with the patch? It supports ROMs up to 8 Megabit, maybe that's causing some issue.

As I mentioned the original unmodified ROM works ok so I believe my EPROM and PCB are both functioning normally.

I think the retranslation uses paging in slot 1, and the original does not. This may be the key to the bug.

Sounds like that could well be the culprit. Would changing the slot to mimic the original be a difficult undertaking?

Messing around with game code is well beyond my abilities, would using a donor cart my best option?

Bear in mind that the dialogue is intended to be localised, not literally translated.
