World Grand Prix courses

Here's a rip showing the full backdrops for each course.
I've identified some of the real world tracks these resemble. BKK found the others. *course 6 has graphics that would better fit course 2, and possibly vice versa Course 1 - Japan (Fuji Speedway) [Mt. Fuji and surrounds] Course 2 - Netherlands (Zandvoort) [Pointed roof buildings, bridges and trees*] Course 3 - France (Paul Ricard Full Circuit) [Eiffel Tower and city surrounds, night] Course 4 - Canada (Mosport Park) Course 5 - South Africa (Kyalami) Course 6 - Austria (Österreichring) [Tulips and windmills*] Course 7 - USA East (Watkins Glen Grand Prix Circuit) [New York] Course 8 - Spain (Circuito del Jarama) Course 9 - Sweden (Scandinavian Raceway) Course 10 - USA West (Long Beach) [Los Angeles] Course 11 - England (Brands Hatch) [Big Ben and London surrounds] Course 12 - Monaco (Circuit de Monaco) [Monte Carlo city, night] |

Nice work, I never realised that they used real track layouts!
Course 4 - Canada (Mosport Park) Course 5 - South Africa (Kyalami) |

That's great, can we add them to the Maps section? What do you think about annotating the country and track details on the images?

I tried to compare the unidentified ones to the maps on this Wikipedia page, but I couldn't find anything. I wonder if they're just made up.

All these courses remind me Super Monaco GP, could it be the same ?

They're all F1 tracks used in the 1976 season (Buenos Aires was cancelled). I think I got them all;
Course 1 - Japan (Fuji Speedway) [Mt. Fuji and surrounds] Course 2 - Netherlands (Zandvoort) [Pointed roof buildings, bridges and trees*] Course 3 - France (Paul Ricard Full Circuit) [Eiffel Tower and city surrounds, night] Course 4 - Canada (Mosport Park) Course 5 - South Africa (Kyalami) Course 6 - Austria (Österreichring) [Tulips and windmills*] Course 7 - USA East (Watkins Glen Grand Prix Circuit) [New York] Course 8: Spain (Circuito del Jarama) Course 9 - Sweden (Scandinavian Raceway) Course 10 - USA West (Long Beach) [Los Angeles] Course 11 - England (Brands Hatch) [Big Ben and London surrounds] Course 12 - Monaco (Circuit de Monaco) [Monte Carlo city, night] The track layouts are generally different today. Edit: Corrected Course 8. |

Isn't the course 10 theme Las Vegas?

No balkry, I thought about that too, but the map I made is quite different. Glad to see that this is getting sorted anyway.

I don't think so, as it would probably be desert colour with flashy casinos on the horizon.

I'd like to see all the courses rotated for comparison like this, although I can see it's a bit of a pain :)

The layouts get changed so often, and some tracks have multiple configurations, but I've tried to find the layouts used for the 1976 F1 season where available.

Absolutely, I'll work on this version. Great job! I was researching a little closer to when the game was produced, 85-86. So the game is actually a period piece :D |

Maybe the track designer had a book of the 1976 season.
The tallest building in course 7 looks like the Empire State Building. This would be a good candidate for hacking. Replace the "XX COURSE" with the proper track name and fix the mixed up backdrops for course 2 and 6. As it also has a track editor it might not be too difficult to add some extra courses. Maybe have the full 1976 season in correct order :) |

1976 didn't visit Argentina (as mentioned, Buenos Aires was cancelled), race 8 is Spain at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circuito_del_Jarama . The cover art shows cars and drivers from the 1985 season. (Thanks to an anonymous tipster for the information.)
Since 1976 was a fairly eventful year in F1, it might be fun to also add a story mode with some of the stuff going on? A bit tricky to fit in with the actual game, of course. |

Yeah, I just noticed that, comparison pic already updated. :)
Correction: Course 8: Spain (Circuito del Jarama) |

I added a link back here to the game's page and a note about the seasons depicted. Excuse my ignorance: why 1976, and not 1975, 1977 or any other year? Did they change the tracks used that much?

Attached a version with names to the top post, course 8 fixed too.

Yeah, they changed a lot. Some like the British Grand Prix alternated between Brands Hatch and Silverstone. Others like Fuji were only held for a couple of seasons (1976, 1977). Others were ending or just starting then, so it's only 1976 when all of these circuits were used in the same season.

Do you think it'd look better with the clouds filling the sky (i.e. repeated)?

Possibly, now I'm looking a little closer at it the sky tilemap is the full 256 pixels instead of the screen width 248, so it should lay out ok over the 4 screen wide (1024px) landscape.
Edit: added clouds repeated version |

This reminded me of a competition I entered in Sega Power to win tickets to the 1992 British Grand Prix. I managed to get the questions right (I think I browsed through an F1 book in WHSmith ... James Hunt was a bit before my time). It came down to the tie-breaker ... how wide was Nigel Mansell's moustache. I thought I had an advantage with that by measuring my father's moustache. Unfortunately I didn't win the tickets, but I did win a runners up prize of a "Ballistic rave top", and got my name printed in the winners list a couple of issues later. I think that was the only magazine competition I ever entered.

The swedish track is now known as Anderstorp Raceway. I don't know when exactly did the name changed.

I just registered to say thanks for those images. I might turn them into some artwork, as this is still one of my favorite racing games.
I've also thought about how to make a 30-year-old game seem somewhat new, and I'm now wondering if it would be worthwhile to replace the backgrounds with Super Monaco GP 2 backgrounds. |
