Computer Entertainer newsletter / The Video Game Update
Post Posted: Tue Feb 17, 2015 9:11 pm
I have an intuition I have already posted this or at least discussed it with Maxim, but can't find traces of it. Frank Cifaldi / TheRedEye obtained and scanned this thing.

Available here as OCR-ed PDF documents.
https://ia600806.us.archive.org/15/items/ComputerEntertainer/

Three volumes, about 1400 pages.
"The big one is I think 1981-1987, then one is 1988 and one is 1989."

It was a sort of professional publication that covered computer stuff and games. This has tons of listings, preview, articles. If you search for "Sega" with a lot of patience there are definitive reference to codenames and unreleased stuff (I once mashed search and found some and then lost them).

Anybody wants to do that? If you find something or at least can say "I have thoroughly covered pages xxx to xxx" please post it.

Lots of good stuff from late 1988 here.

1988 09
Bomber Raid referred as Super River Raid.

1988 10
Newly Announced Titles:
Buggy Dash
Carnival
Warrior Quest
BMX Biker (Cancelled)
Cube Zone (Cancelled)
Zero Fighter (Cancelled)

1988 12
Arcade Command Stick
Carnival

What would be Carnival? Shooting Gallery was already released.
Buggy Dash?
Warrior Quest is Spellcaster in Brasil so perhaps it was a code-name.
BMX Biker? May not be Alex Kidd, because BIKER and not referring to Alex Kidd?
What is Zero Fighter?

Unlikely I suppose, but perhaps Carnival could have been a port of the 1980 coin op, or maybe an updated version of that classic. Or more likely it was something else entirely!

Yes, Warrior Quest is confirmed to change name to Spellcaster in a later issue. Not really any more info on Carnival (besides it being a light phaser game) or Buggy Dash (besides it being a racing game). Maybe Buggy Dash became R.C. Grand Prix. All three of these were working titles only, and may or may not be released in 1989.

I think BMX Biker probably was Alex Kidd, it was advertised in a 1988 Sears catalogue at least. Note that both Woody Pop and "BMX Trial" had already been announced as cancelled in January 1988, maybe they had a brief change of mind before finally cancelling the Paddle Controller games and Mega Phaser (not long after that they also discontinue the 3D Glasses).

This is the one and only mention of "Zero Fighter", I have no idea what it is, but the Zero Fighter was a Japanese WWII fighter aircraft. The other cancellations seem to be Paddle Controller or Mega Phaser related, so maybe it would have required one of those, although it would have been simple to recode those for Joypad use as seen in Rambo III and Woody Pop (on Game Gear).

The desription of the Arcade Command Stick sounds like Dempa's XE-1 Pro. Late in 1989 it's then said to support both Master System and Mega Drive, which could be the XE-1 ST2. So maybe that was planned to be a rebadged version of that similar to how the Handle Controller was a rebadged Hori peripheral.

I never really associated Bomber Raid with the River Raid franchise before, but it seems obvious in hindsight.

I guess this is where Bock's Super Baketball demo came from (It wasn't at 1989 Summer CES, "replaced" by Basketball Nightmare instead). The only comment they make about it is "excellent graphics", probably just referring to the demo screen unless they had more than one demo there.

Description of James Bond: Countdown to Meltdown;

Quote
JAMES BOND 007-COUNTDOWN TO MELTDOWN casts the player as 007 in a global race to recover pieces of a puzzle which lead to an overheated thermonuclear reactor buried deep in the earth by the evil scaramanga.

That's all of the scanned issues, apparently Computer Entertainer did continue until June 1990. Sega took back distribution of the SMS from Tonka at the end of 1989, which probably explains why there were no 1989 holiday releases (Tonka's last release was in September 1989), and why so many games announced at 1989 Summer CES never got released. From reading scans of GamePro Sega never released any more SMS games until the announcement of the SMS II at 1990 summer CES, so there was a nine month gap with no first party releases.

The August 1989 interview with Steve Hanawa is really interesting with regards to how fast they went from deciding to launch in the US following Ni****do's successful 1985 test, to having working prototypes at 1986 summer CES which arrived just the day before CES started.

These are from GamePro and EGM. These were planned release dates, so may have shifted after publication:

1990 06 Dead Angle
1990 06 Golden Axe
1990 06 Psycho Fox
1990 07 R.C. Grand Prix
1990 07 Slap Shot
1990 07 Alex Kidd in Shinobi World

1991 Sp Michael Jackson's Moonwalker
1991 04 Golden Axe Warrior
1991 06 Strider
1991 08 Spider-Man
1991 12 Sonic the Hedgehog

All the releases up until June 1987 (Wonder Boy) have "SM" variants, with one exception; "Great Baseball". The review of Great Baseball mentions that it's just out in time for the baseball season (that started April 6, 1987), and the version released in Japan later that year in August (The Pro Yakyuu - Pennant Race) is significantly upgraded. So I wonder if this was rushed out for the US baseball season, possibly being manufactured later, but getting shipped by air and getting released before some of the "SM" variants. This is also an odd one in Europe, there doesn't seem to be an English only European variant of this, instead Italy and Germany got the US version, with locally translated manuals. Every other game released in Europe up until Wonder Boy have English only variants.
