Rush Coding Competition 2 (was: Fall Coding/Music Compo?)
Post Posted: Wed Jun 24, 2015 1:02 pm
[Admin: Coding competition, deadline 8th July. Deliberately short notice! Original post follows...]

Don't you feel that March 2016 is way too far? :|
What about a 2015 Fall Compo? It might be held at 'half' birthday, which is 3 months from now...
Might have a relaxed set of rules too, like that even previous projects can be submitted, if substantially/very improved...
Just suggesting/wondering...

Argh, I have finally managed to take it reeaaally slow with my next project. At the moment I can actually work - slowly but steadily - on SMS stuff without it taking over my entire life. I have worked so hard to get to this point. I have even begun to pay attention to my regular day job lately. Don't push me back into the black hole of 8-bitness with a tempting suggestion like that :)

Serioulsly, I plan to be ready with something modest for the regular compo in the spring. And judging by recent forum posts, we are all working on the same game: Lots of enemies, bullet collision, etc... haha.

I'm in the same boat. I'd love to see a fall compo like that happen, but there's no way I could participate.

Seriously? I can't do that since 2008 at least :D

Well, if everybody reply that there's no way they could partecipate... of course better no compo than an empty one.

And, no, I'm not working on a SMS shoot-em-up... sorry.

I would be able to enter.
And i wouldn't mind a mini-compo, even if just to get people posting a bit more.

So, if it does indeed happen, i'm in.

25th November is a traditional deadline, a few months after the half year anniversary though.

I would suggest to not abide by the bock birthday conspiracy and instead take note that July 8th is Maxim birthday!

Wow guys, have you seen that? Maxim is implying that you are not motivated enough to do something for July 8. If only someone could prove him wrong...

A 2nd Rush Coding Competition like in http://www.smspower.org/forums/1760-SMSPowerRushCodingCompetition? :)
Maybe Hacks could be allowed for this compo as well?
I would definitely love to try out new homebrew!

Since it seems to me this is actually facetious enough, I guess we can post our entries directly in this topic, right? ;)

I think you can post them here but waiting for M Day (July 8) is preferable :)

First of all: Happy Birthday Maxim :)

Then: here's our (tibone's and mine) entry. A simple demo with crazy bouncing snails, with adequate music ;)

... are we going to be winners and last at the same time?

(source code included. Took more time to debug than to code...)

Nice, I like it. That tune is going to be bouncing around in my head for awhile I think. :)

Haha, glad you like the song.
I was just having fun with major scales there. (I guess i could name the tune Major Fun, hahaha).

I also worked on something else.
A full-mini-micro playable dungeon made with twee2sam.

I called it Bay Third Dungeon (can you guess why?)

It is rushed as hell, but it should be fully working (tested a bit on KegaFusion and a bit on my SMS1).

(this download has a map/solution sheet/references sheet, unlike the one i attached).

Haha - sweet little package here! Also a good demonstration of smslib-powered c-coding. You get quite a lot of action from relatively few and comprehensible lines of code :) Congrats guys - and not least happy birthday Maxim!

Thanks guys :) I'm just leaving on holiday so I didn't get much chance to try them but I'll see if I can sneak some playing in while I'm away...

I thoroughly enjoyed both entries (and even solved the dungeon without any help or map).

Congratulations to both participants ... and of course to you Maxim.

I believe voting is going to be useless... (and I wouldn't avoid another defeat)

tibone: really nice work. rush coded? Amazing :)

Happy Birthday Maxim! :)

Nice entries!

sverx: You didn't want to use your mass collision algorithm yet? :D Really cool demo and awesome sound track! I wish I could interact with the demo somehow. :)

tibone: Nice plot, really funny. :D I've encountered a few glitches but I guess it's not your fault. Can't tell where they occurred without spoiling.

Kagesan:
Glad you enjoyed, the dungeon is supposed to be easy, but did you find all the rooms and items? :)

sverx:
Credit must go to haroldoop for twee2sam, no coding required, just a bit of twee scripting and making the assets. Which is why i was able to do it.
And yes, voting is not necessary, because either way, i would place first and last, haha.

Calindro:
Glad you enjoyed it (and the tune for sverx's demo). Feel free to pm me any glitches and i'll see if it's something i can fix on my end. I tried to be funny and lighthearted, after all, it is a birthday-themed game. (despite the fact that the player can in fact, die)

Is there any interest in the twee source code?
I can post it, if anyone wants to take a look at it.

And because i forgot before, Happy Birthday, Maxim!

No such algorithm exists, and I'm not coding it :p

I know no coding is required, but also making assets requires time...

Haha - a fun little adventure, with a simple, but rather catchy and well-fitting tune. I have not yet completed the game. I thought I was smart but ended up drinking poison, and in my second attempt I got lost. But I will eventually succeed :) I like the subtle Sega fanboy service, and hints to the mini-compo. Good job!

Great job! Good graphics, nice music, and the occasional inside joke here and there;, it even has a RPG combat system! ;)

It's a always a pleasure to create tools to make peoples lives somewhat easier. I can't wait to see what people will do next. ;)

Thanks haroldo, glad you enjoyed it, itsn't the most creative adventure game, but it was made in a rush. :)

So, did anyone caught all the anagrams for Birthday in the text ?
And all the sms references?
