Ski Master v1.0
----------------

Our entry into the sms power 2015 coding competition.

A simple downhill skiing game for the Sega Master System. I always
loved this kind of game as a kid. I thought it would be well suited
for a Master System game.

Eric

Controls:
---------

Button 1 :- Jump
Left <-> Right :- Steering
Down :- Accelerate down the hill

The aim of the game is to get to the bottom in one piece and to pass through
as many gates as possible.

This game seems pretty cool, pun intended. The graphics look nice and the controls are smooth. It's really fun to speed off of the little bumps. My only criticism is that it's quite frustrating being unable to jump while accelerating.

Hi BrambleG,

Good spotting on the acceleration / jump logic. I'll fix it to allow you to jump while holding down on the dpad.

New version has the jumping while accelerating feature, and a brand new level tune =)

I like that is an original game and in a rarely represented genre. It plays well, the tunes are catchy (but levels are quite short to feel like you've fully heard the tune). It looks like based on the engine you could rework the levels and really improve the game. It is a bit short now, with longer levels and finely crafted obstacles it could really take off. :)

Thanks Bock!

Well, I really have to thank Martin for his help and his great tool Mod2Psg2.

Being able to load VGM's from every great game of my childhood and execute the tunes in lower speed helps a lot in learning tricks and making details!

Hi Bock,

Yeah I just threw those levels together at the last minute. I'd really like to spend a bit of time and create some nice playable longer levels.

There has been some debate about whether to remove the manual jump logic and instead rely on just the bump jumps on the map.

The first few minutes I played the game I didn't realise you could jump manually and was always aiming for the bump. Then I could the first crack was to hard to jump over because the bump is placed on the top-left and tried the buttons which I had overlooked.
I think the game would work and be better if you couldn't jump with a button, but that'll require some level design work to use that potential.

Good job guys! I very much like the light mood of the graphics and music. Even when you crash, it is feel-good :) And nice detail with the mountain view at the start of the levels.

I like how it is controlled. Sometimes, when I got to the side, I'm accidentally running over a jump, and then off I go into a tree. This built-in danger of going sideways matches my memories of skiing (it was many years ago).

As it is now, there is no need to accelerate, right?

Actually since it's downhill, you should make the other key *brake*, not accelerate... or you could make that an optional game mode :)

This is fun! Interesting to see if it will work on real hardware :)

Would it be possible to get high scores in this? Maybe some points simply for scrolling a certain distance, and more points for doing cool things like jumping on those snowy hills, going through flags etc? It would make the game even more fun for me than it already is :D

It works perfectly on my hardware. Fun, very polished, nice background music... this is just another example of what could be confused by an original ROM. Chapeau! :D

I found a bug :
When you jump into the finish the SFX will get stuck until the next stage.

I love the graphics and music.
In version 1.0.1 there are only 2 levels ?
It would be great to accelerate only when down is pressed.
Will you add an abominable snow monster? :)
Great work!

Yes, I'm currently reworking the controls slightly so acceleration will be more important in the future.

Yes I'd like to have a brake button. I think it will take the place of the jump function.

Nice find. Yes I wasn't updating the SFX channel in the skier end sequence. I'll fix that in the next release.

I think we'll definitely have to add that! :) I'm thinking of some ideas on how / when it will appear in the game.
