Hardware Link Shortcut
Post Posted: Sun Feb 22, 2015 5:01 pm
Should we add a Hardware page shortcut on the Home page and the top shortcut bar? The page is not complete, but I'll fix it up. Also, adding a shortcut might let other users help fix the page a little.

I removed the link from homepage because it's way too primitive and confusing at the moment. I witnessed someone pressing on that link as their first click and they were very confused (4 items include 1 duplicate for GG/Game Gear).

Until there is decent work put on it it's not worth exposing to casual site users.

Yeah... I noticed that. I need the GG link removed, if possible.
How would I clean up the interface for normal users?

I removed the GG page, apparently no page was linking to it.

We could do with some decent content on those pages, including a bunch of stuff we currently have no pages for (all known systems, peripherals, etc). Maybe we can steal the content from Wikipedia (with attribution) and then make it awesome from there? This may mean we have to liberally licence those pages but it's not as if we intend to enforce copyright anyway.

Hmm, it used to link to the Game Gear page...
I started taking the stuff from wikis(Including Wikipedia) and editing it, but it started taking too long, so I wrote it myself.

There's already stuff there that's plain wrong (typical Wikipedia sources>reality nonsense), let's fix it :)

Yes, I know Wikipedia is... In another universe :)
I once heard that a math professor fixed one of the articles, and the next day, it was back to the way it was before...

So, yes. Let's fix it wiht no regard to Other-Universe-Pedia there. :)

P.S. I've been working on it for the past day or so, what did I miss?

I don't really like the tone of the articles. While we don't want to be too much like Wikipedia, what's there now is veering towards Uncyclopedia, and that's not a good thing.

That's totally unintentional. If it sounds like Uncyclopedia, I'm running out of info, and I'm using filler. And if I'm out of info, I need more. Do you have any for me? :)

That could have been phrased better...

Let's keep it factual for now. We don't need to cite everything, and we can do better by actually knowing things - for example, Wikipedia seems to have gone nuts over the Sega hardware pages listing CPU speeds to various levels of precision, and suggests that a Mark III runs at a slower 3.58MHz compared to the Master System at 4MHz, when we know that both are the same speed.

We can do the spec list thing for each console. We can make pages for every peripheral we can think of, even if they're just photos and a short description. We can describe variants and pack in games.

Ugh... tell me about Wikipedia turning too bureaucratic.
Just one example when the Commodore 64 was delisted from Virtual Console, the info was not updated for at least a couple months because the ARTICLE CZAR refused to accept it without an official press release (and being of the like 80 million people who bought a Wii who could just turn it on and navigate to the shop as proof wasn't good enough)

Regardless of Wikipedia being bureaucratic (it has its reasons I guess).

We should know our stuff, we have technical, collectors, intelligent and passionate people here. We want useful, factual, eventually detailed articles. We create original data when it's missing (that means researching, scanning, taking pictures). Some of the earlier pages drafted by Capt contained lots of rambling and jokes. While it'd be fun on its own site this is not the purpose of the main site and we can't keep that online. http://www.smspower.org/Hardware/RechargeableBatteryPack?action=diff

While we want Hardware pages to exists someday they have to be meaningful and useful. If they aren't there's no point and we can live without Hardware pages for a longer while than we already did.

If we have them we could settle on a format.

- Hardware specs
- Regional releases information
- Licensed / main peripherals
- Other peripherals
- Detailed variations information (can be as simple as a list), that we can populate with pictures.

Working on peripherals first may actually be somehow easier and more interesting that systems themselves?

I'm not against the possibility of partnering with Sega Retro who have good stuff done on their site. It could either mean copying some of their content or just linking to it at the moment.

Yeah... sorry about that... I tend to do that in person too... I'll attempt to fix the Game Gear one(Assuming it hasn't already).

I started fixing the others and I added some more. Do you mind checking them?

I don't think we should use images from Sega Retro without permission. The site doesn't specify a licence for content or images.

Ideally we should make our own images. Bock, how extensive is your Game Gear accessory collection? :)

The FM Tuner is a third party peripheral, that's not at all clear. Neither is it clear how it works - does anything appear on screen, or is it using the Game Gear as the world's least efficient amplifier?

"Oddly enough" is not factual. The FM Tuner probably doesn't do AM because it's not big enough for the necessary aerial.

Please put something sensible in the edit summary, such as a summary of what you changed.

I suggest we should use the present tense to describe hardware, since it still exists.

I didn't fix every page, I just made some indicative changes.

Don't take pictures from Sega Retro without us reaching an agreement first (which we may try).

I don't have a very exhaustive collection of GG accessories, and it is all in storage in Paris at the moment :(
Here's what I have for reference.

Sega Game Gear Power Battery AC Adaptor Set (Japan, New packaging)
Sega Game Gear Infocom Battery Adapter (Japan)
Sega Game Gear TV Tuner Pack (Japan, Early packaging)
Sega Game Gear TV Tuner Pack (Japan, New packaging)
Sega Game Gear TV Auto Tuner (Japan, New packaging)
TecToy Game Gear Modulo de TV (Brasil)
Sega Game Gear Big Window II (Japan, Early packaging)
Sega Game Gear TV Tuner (Europe)
Sega Game Gear AV Cable (US)
Game Gear FM Tuner (US)
Sega Gear-to-Gear Link Cable
Sega Game Gear Wide Gear (Europe)
Sega Game Gear Battery Pack (Europe)
Powergrip Rechargeable Power Pack (Europe)
Master Gear Converter
Gear Master Converter
Master Link cables
Game Gear Game Genie (US)
Game Gear Pro Action Replay (Europe)
Game System "Etui antichoc" (France)

But I've got a fair amount of Game Gear console variations / packaging.
Perhaps it would be worth listing those somewhere.

There is a lack of quality pictures for Hardware we'd need them at some point, perhaps with the help of collectors. It's important and harder to get consistent pictures unfortunately. I suppose I could have a shooting session inside my storage box someday but that's unlikely to happen so soon.
