is there any way i can rig up a power led or something that will tell me that there is power actually going to the thing

yes, the controller port works @ 5 volts you can add a 5 volt light there to check for power.

6 7 8 9
1: Up
2: Down
3: Left
4: Right
5: +5 volts
6: Button 1
7: TH - not connected in a normal controller
8: Ground
9: Button 2
Ignore the TH line - it's not used by a normal controller (it is used by the Light Phaser, Paddle and Handle controllers).
The SMS interprets a button or direction input as "pressed" when that line is low (i.e. connected to Ground), and "not pressed" when the line is high or floating (unconnected).
