Golvellius bug: Lost Room has been found
Post Posted: Sun May 11, 2014 1:10 am
For many years, my brothers and I have been puzzled by a screen in Golvellius that appears out of place and identical to another room in the game. So, my brother (Quinntesson, author of the Genesis/SegaCD/32X emulator 'AGES') checked more deeply into it and found that there was, indeed, a bug in Golvellius where one room was inadvertently used twice. Since this bug didn't break the game, the game was shipped any way.

Today, we present you with a detailed description of the bug and a patch for Golvellius so that you can finally play this game with the proper room, as it was meant to be played.

All map locations refer to the coordinates on the following map:
http://www.smspower.org/seganotebook/golvlius/golvmap.html

The incorrect room is at C5 and is currently identical to the room layout used for room E1.

The patch also includes a fix for the cave in room H4 which has garbled graphics.

Enjoy!

I believe it was correct in the Japanese version of the game. This ties in well with our new Hacks section, which you're welcome to add this to.

This is really cool! I'm very impressed with the detective work that went into determining the cause of the bug, and providing a fix as well.

Now I have a good excuse to play through Golvellius again. :D

IPS is an ancient format, there must be patchers around. Here's a few candidates:

https://github.com/BlockoS/ips-patcher
Lunar IPS under WINE
http://zerosoft.zophar.net/jips.php with Java
It's only three bytes, patch it by hand!
Some options here, including a Perl script: http://wiki.superfamicom.org/snes/show/How+to+Use+ROM+Patches

I created section for this hack here:

http://www.smspower.org/Hacks/Golvellius-SMS-Bugfix

There's also a link to this on the main Hacks page. It didn't fit into the 'Game Gear to Master System' section so I created a new one just called 'Master System'. Admins of the site can decide if that's the format they want or if it needs to be tweaked.

Thanks
