Offering to scan a few manuals/inserts!
Post Posted: Sun Sep 05, 2010 12:12 pm
Hello

I am offering to scan some manuals or inserts. Are there any in-demand stuff that I have? I have a complete export collection (excluding variations). Most (but not all) games CIB.

Is there anything missing from the scans section that you'd like?

Make me a request and I'll scan it :)

I think Maxim will make you a more detailed answer, but basically if you fancy browsing the Scan section some are of quite bad quality and clearly needs to be redone.

Maybe we can set up a page listing all the low resolution scans? (it should be faisable with a fancy search query)

Well, searches can't do numerical comparison :( The best way would be for people to tag low-quality scans.

Anyway, here's some searches that tend to show up bad scans:

A specific request:

http://www.smspower.org/Scans/Sega-Catalogue-01-TheSegaVideoGameSystem

This seems to be missing the inner pages? It's only found in early EU releases.

Ahh so I assume the priority is to get better quality of items currently scanned rather than scanning new things?

I'll upload some things as soon as I can but right now I'm too busy to do so =(

No, it's just that missing things are harder to list. Ideally I'd like to get scans of things we don't have scans of at all, like many GG games, but I assume you are referring to an SMS collection.

I forgot that most Euro/Aus covers are near-identical, just the Aussie ones have a slightly smaller width.

As for game gear games I do have about 80 however 60 or more all are just loose cartridges and don't have boxes

Well, we're adding those cut-off Aussie boxes separately.

Any chance you could scan the manual for the game Exerion for the SG-1000?

Many Thanks.

Is there also an English language manual?

Can I get it in PNG? It'd come out a lot better with some preprocessing before the JPEG compression.

Thanks :)

It looks like you scanned it at low res and the scanner's done a bad job of resizing. Better to scan at 300dpi+ if possible and bilinear resample in software (or let me do it). Still, it's way better than the old image :)

You're welcome. I'll see if I can play around with the DPI settings next time I scan.

I've been looking through the low-res scans but almost all are US/EU and almost all my games are AU so I guess they wouldn't be much use?

OK I scanned two more.
Ayrton Senna Super Monaco GP II (Australia)
WWF Wrestlemania Steel Cage Challenge (Europe)

Both png, both 300DPI. 11mb files so too big for forums/imageshack. I've emailed them to bock and maxim. Hope they look ok!

I've attached a scan of the Spanish Limited Edition version of Winter Olympics as it was missing from the site. My scanner is not great and the cover has a sticker on the back, but as it's such an uncommon variation I hope it will do for now.

I wasn't sure where to post this - maybe there should be a dedicated thread for submitting scans? (Or is there one already which I've missed?)

EDIT: I've also added the Spanish version of The Jungle Book (El Libro de la Selva).

I've added them:

http://www.smspower.org/Scans/JungleBook-SMS-ES
http://www.smspower.org/Scans/WinterOlympics-SMS-ES

Best way is to email scans or start a thread of your own.

This isn't in the scans section yet.

My scanner can't do this it's too big :(

However I took the best photo I could, sorry for the poor quality!

You could scan it in parts and let someone else combine the scans.

Perhaps it's staring me in the face, but I can't see the difference between Bank Panic - EU - Card (A) and Bank Panic - EU -Card (B)?

The most noticeable difference is the line under the title on the front, but there are other minor differences as well.

Thanks, I can now see the differences in the grid pattern as well - don't know how I missed them the first time around. :)

Next batch:

Baku Baku (BR) (address on blue background)
F-16 Fighter (DE) (The Sega Card)
Ghost House (US) (The Sega Card) (Now, there are no limits®)
Great Soccer (DE) (The Sega Card)
Great Soccer (IT) (The Sega Card)
Hang On (IT) (The Sega Card)
Olympic Gold (FR) (Limited Edition)
Olympic Gold (ES) (Limited Edition)
Super Tennis (DE) (The Sega Card)
TransBot (DE) (The Sega Card)
Ultimate Soccer (EU)
Winter Olympics (EU)
Wonder Boy III - The Dragon's Trap (EU) (8 Langs - No R)
World Cup USA 94 (EU)
World Cup USA 94 (DE) (Limited Edition)

Note: The (IT) versions of Hang On and Great Soccer are, I believe, identical to the (AU) versions - I'm not sure if/how you can tag this in the scans section.

After further PM discussion, I've removed the "variant" as it was really just some lazy photoshopping.

Added. This prompted me to dig up and upload the original 150dpi scans from Nop's which I'd resized down years ago to save bandwidth; these days I'm not so worried about that. As a result I rejected the struck-through scans as his were better (less blurry and almost the same resolution).

I'll wait for someone in Australia to scan them :)

Cool - as I've said before, my scanner is pretty poor so unfortunately these are the best I can do with the hardware I have.

The AU version of Hang On has already been scanned and is identical to my IT version.

Yes, I've left both http://www.smspower.org/Scans/HangOn-SMS-AU-Card and http://www.smspower.org/Scans/HangOn-SMS-IT-Card available although they're almost indistinguishable. For SMS games the inlays were often cut off in Australia, I'm not sure if that applies to cards though, so I'll wait and see...

I have both (AU) and (IT) versions of Ghost House and the boxes/inserts are identical. I should have some more (AU) cards coming soon so I'll be able to confirm once they arrive.

In the meantime, one new scan and two replacements:

I now have both the Australian and Italian versions of Ghost House, Hang On and F-16 Fighter, and I can confirm in all cases that the inserts are identical. I can scan them all if necessary, though it seems a little pointless.

I bought some more sample artwork similar to the Sonic Chaos sample that I scanned last year:

Scans attached - I'm still struggling with a poor-quality scanner I'm afraid, but some of these are pretty interesting so I hope they're good enough for now.

Nice scans! Curious to see they've used the Ultimate Soccer (Mega Drive) text for these samples (oh and various Mega Drive screenshots).
