Scans
Post Posted: Sat Apr 21, 2012 12:29 pm
Should there be a sticky thread in this forum to allow people to easily submit scans?

It seems that new threads created solely to submit scans are unwanted. Since there is no other obvious way to submit through the website, this appears to have led to the impression that the scans themselves are unwanted.

That is correct, it was an error on my side to suggest there was a sticky thread at the time. I think the reason being not having a thread is that we would like to receive higher-resolution as possible scans (possibly lossless) and maybe this doesn't work well with attachments.

Since the thread linked above we added this page to clarify scan submission:
http://www.smspower.org/Scans/HowToContribute

And I imagine we should promote this thread as Sticky or let Maxim reformulate his own first message for such thread :)

To be honest, we have too many stickies right now :) We should think of a better way, maybe an index thread or having some auto-linked HowToContribute pages in each group.

Perhaps the current sticky threads could be replaced by a single "How to contribute" sticky? This could contain links to the existing threads and to a new thread for scans.

US Scans (Inserts & Manuals)
Post Posted: Fri Jul 20, 2012 9:22 pm
This seemed like the best place to post this. In a little over a week, I should have everything ready and setup to start scanning in my US Sega Master System collection. I've already completed a number of other Sega systems, and I've been posted everything on my site at the following URL:

http://ratigators.com/

I went ahead and posted a single Sega Master System game as a test.

This was originally started based upon some conversations over at The Cover Project in the RAW Scans forum (again, can't provide a link :)

I'm still about 20 games shy of a complete US set (with just a couple additional games missing manuals), though, if my previous work is any example, I plan on tracking the last few down (I'm a patient person and can wait for a deal) and eventually posting those as well.

Also, usually when scanning in manuals, I might find a couple with some issues, that I'll usually go ahead and scan and replace later if I track down a replacement.

Awesome - I'll try to keep up. (Assuming your posting here counts as permission to user your scans - you didn't explicitly mention it.)

You assume correctly, and the fact that you listed me as the contributor is perfect. Thanks!

As with my other system scans, I'll be doing 2 a day, one from each end of the alphabet. Also, when I'm actively scanning a system, I move it to the top, so you won't have to scroll so far down :)

Today starts my daily scanning of Sega Master System games. I pull a game from the beginning and end of the alphabet each day. As mentioned previously, I don't yet have a complete NTSC-U set of Sega Master System titles, but probably more than enough to get started scanning manuals and inserts (102 out of 114). I've finished auditing everything, and here are my notes (so there are no surprises):

Missing Manuals
Alf
Fantasy Zone
Teddy Boy

Damaged Manuals
Aztec Adventure (rough shape)
Ninja, The (ripped off back cover)

Damaged Inserts
Ghost House (cut out UPC)

Missing Games
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Casino Games
James 'Buster' Douglas Knockout Boxing
Power Strike
R.C. Grand Prix
Rampage

For the games listed above, I have eBay Saved Searches to watch for deals. Damaged manuals and inserts I'm scanning in anyways and will eventually replace. Some games aren't too hard to find, but I usually hold out for an auction with a decent starting price (like 99 cents) instead of Buy It Now style auctions, or I'd rather wait for a "manual only" auction on my "missing manual" games rather than buy another entire copy of a game. I do/did have a few of the "missing games" already, though, loose carts or they have since gone missing (I had a package of a deal I got on Kung Fu Kid, Quartet and Rampage that the seller shipped to the wrong address originally that I'm starting to doubt will ever make its way to me).

I switched up all of my links to use the new MediaFire gallery format. They previously defaulted to the old gallery format that they had since removed, which resulted in the links going straight to just a file list.

So, now they are back to a nice gallery view if someone wants to read a manual without ever downloading it.

Also, as noted on my site, if you could care less about viewing a manual online and just want to download it, just remove the "/view" from the URL. The old gallery format had a "File Manager" button to get back to the file listing, though, the new one does not.

I picked up replacement manuals for the following games:

My Hero
Pro Wrestling

And picked up copies of the following games:

Aerial Assault
Bomber Raid
Golden Axe
Kung Fu Kid
Quartet
Slap Shot
Spider-Man

I also updated my post above to remove the items I no longer need.

I'm halfway through scanning my Master System games, and as mentioned, I had to skip some games that I do not yet own complete copies of, and scheduled to skip 6 more, and will simply update the links when I find a good deal on a copy.

Today wraps up my scheduled Sega Master System insert/manual scans. There are still 6 games, 3 manuals and 2 replacement inserts that I still need to eventually pick up, and I'll post here in this thread when I make any updates.

I have 3 more games on the way that I'll get scanned and uploaded once they arrive, and edited my post above with what I'm still missing (in the instance where anyone here has spares they are willing to sell for a fair price).

For those wanting some more stats, so far I'm at 1,182 Sega Master Scans, so if you take away the insert scans and do the math, that's another 2,148 pages of manuals scanned.

As for MediaFire stats, they tell me I'm now hosting 11,348 Sega scans. If you take away the zip files and once again do the math, that means I've scanned about 10,564 times, resulting in approximately 21,128 pages of manuals scanned.

I did post in a few places (TCP, CAG, DigitPress, SegaAge, etc) about trying to do a more collaborative effort on Genesis and Game Gear, with manuals either being donated or with me covering cost of shipping and return shipping (to ensure a level of consistency with all scans), and I received no response.

So, other than scanning in any missing items I pick up or deciding to do back inserts across the board for Sega Saturn and Sega Dreamcast, this closes the book on my system level scan projects.

Your efforts are much appreciated, I now have a huge backlog and the quality means I can OCR the manuals too - all great stuff to have online and available for everyone.

TSOLFAN, can you point out which manuals are still missing - i might be able to add some of them :)

I don't know what is on maxim's backlog at this moment and it would not be great to do duplicate work ;)

Yea, the games where I'm missing a manual but went ahead and scanned the insert, I didn't include in my count.

As for the missing pages, I'll check these and let you know when K have them uploaded

Thanks for letting me know!

I've scanned in the pages I missed and reuploaded all of the files (so the numbering is correct), including a new zip file.

When I get a chance, I'll run through the rest, but if you notice anything else, please let me know, as there's no point in me trying to build a resource, if that resource is wrong :)

Sorry about that, I was including this in my count, which I didn't have directly linked from ratigators.com:

Sega Master System Game Catalog 1986 (USA)
http://www.mediafire.com/?b7vvj1p5h7e8m

I also have the 1987 catalog, and if I can remember which of the games had one, I'll pull that back out and scan it too.

Sorry, just saw this post. You can check ratigators.com which is where I have everything linked. I've noted the 3 games I'm missing manuals for, as well as the 4 games I still need to pick up. Everything else is scanned in and linked up for viewing online and/or downloading.

Complete Titles:

R.C. Grand Prix

Manuals:
Alf
Fantasy Zone
Teddy Boy

Alex Kidd in Shinobi World has been uploaded. That just leaves James 'Buster' Douglas Knockout Boxing as the only US insert I'm missing and Alf, Fantasy Zone, and Teddy Boy as the only US manuals I'm missing.

Found a reasonably priced copy of Alf, so I replaced my copy that was missing the manual, so the manual is now scanned in:

http://www.ratigators.com/ui.asp?c=SEGAMASTERSYSTEM

I have two more games missing manuals (Fantasy Zone and Teddy Boy) that I'll eventually get around to picking up second copies of.

If anyone has an extra manual of either of those from building their own collections, let me know.

Phantasy Star I scans from old german magazines
Post Posted: Fri Jun 21, 2013 1:51 am
Yup :)

I found 3 scans from old german videogame magazines, both are reviews for Phantasy Star I on the SMS.

The first one is from a magazine called ASM and it was the volume 12/88 - released in december 1988.

The second review is a little bit larger, so it's in 2 pages, namely this one and that one.
The magazine was called Power Play and the scans here were also from the volume 12/88.

Got the screens from a site called ninretro.de, just for information's sake hehe.

If there is any need for translation, I would certainly do it! But only if someone asks for it, lol :))

Peace out!

Your links are blocked by the originating site as an "anti-leeching" measure. For reviews we like to have transcriptions and translations are also nice to have.

I know, I just thought it worth mentioning. I'm not sure it's right to take other people's scans without permission, though. In the past I'd refuse...

Sorry, I was in a hurry and I misread his post, for some reason I assumed that the scans have been provided to that site by that guy himself and he was merely posting links to something he did, while now I saw the "I found 3 scans" part at the beginning of his post. My fault, I'll blank out my previous post.

That guy doesn't need to be adressed in third person, lol! I will ask the owner of the site if it's OK to share the image if You want. On the other side - it's just some freaking scans of some old videogame zines! Who cares if You'll "take" them without "permission" :D

Uploaded my copy of my Fantasy Zone manual finally. Had to pick up a complete copy to gut just for the manual as I couldn't find any loose manuals for sale. So that just leaves me with 2 US manuals left to scan.

I'll probably eventually end up picking up a complete Teddy Boy to also gut for the manual, since I haven't seem to be able to track down a loose manual there either.

This should be Issue 18, or "New Look" Issue 3. The date on the cover is a typo (should be 1988) as explained in the next issue. I downloaded these off of undergroundgamer whilst it was still around, AFAIK they aren't available anywhere else, so I should upload these before my HDD dies.

Seems confusing... So we are missing some issues? Your file seems to be the rather larger originals we don't have the space to put online...

They're only 30MB each. Yes, some issues are missing from here. The one linked says "Issue 3" on the contents page. I've uploaded issues 1 and 4 which are missing from here. I don't have issue 2 or any issues later than 4.

(before anyone ask: the "music system" isn't something by Sega at all, it's by "Giochi Preziosi", and it's included as a bonus)

Yes that catalog would be great.
PS: please use the attachment system to link pictures instead of tinypic.com

I didn't attach it, because it was either not interesting (hence losable) or interesting (hence going to be rescanned along with the rest of the catalog at a higher resolution).

So, this catalog has 28 pages; the central 4 are about a Karaoke system developed by Giochi Preziosi itself, not related to Sega at all, so they can be removed (I included those pages in the archive anyway, for completeness).

The catalog is also filled with typos and whatnot. Many Italians are dumb when it comes to computers and don't know how to type uppercase vowels with accents (e.g. À or È), and I see things like A' or E' sadly way more often than I'd like to. What's weird is that they started it right on the first two pages, then they probably got bored or something since they did it wrong most of the times (and there are some És which should have been Ès, meh).

Quick synopsis.
1 cover;
2-3 stuff about the "Sonic Badge" which could make you win things;
4-5 stuff about a promotion tied to a soccer TV show (vote for the best scored goal and win things). Roberto Mancini is an Italian former soccer player, current trainer;
6-7 stuff about the Mega Drive. Jerry Calà is an Italian comedian;
8-9-10-11 Mega Drive games. Walter Zenga is an Italian former goalkeeper;
12-17 stuff about the Master System II Plus;
13-14-15-16 stuff about the "Canta Tu" (literally: "Sing You", more realistically "You Sing") Karaoke system, not by Sega;
18-19-20-21 Master System games (interesting screenshot of the 16-bit version of Sonic 2);
22-23 stuff about the Game Gear. Gianluigi Lentini is an Italian former soccer player. Interesting typo: "risolzione" should be "risoluzione" (roughly, it's like they wrote "resoltion" instead of "resolution");
24-25-26 Game Gear games (yet another screenshot of the 16-bit version of Sonic 2);
27 boring stuff;
28 back cover.

https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/17315175/Catalogo_Giochi_Preziosi_1992Q4.zip (70945877 bytes). I scanned it at 300 DPI instead of 600, to prevent the filesize from skyrocketing. Trivia: this is a rare case of archive which is smaller in zip format, as the files actually become bigger if rar compression is attempted.

If more detailed transcriptions / translations are required, just ask.

I don't see any of the small ads included in game boxes in the Scans section. My US Columns (Game Gear) came with a Wide Gear and battery Pack ad and a Sega Visions subscription coupon. Are they worth uploading? I guess they are fairly common but still I don't see them uploaded here. Shall I add them?

Yes, but there's not an obvious place for them, so I guess they can go in Other or Catalogues.

It's also worth noting that my Columns has the old-style box similar to this one but it seems to have been manufactured in 1995 or later (?) because the battery pack/wide gear ad leaflets have a 1995 copyright and have the new logo/design. It has the "KA" rating in the front and some differences in the back. Is it worth uploading as a variation? Also, how do I upload a variation? Shall I create the Scans/Columns-GG-US-Front-Variation and Scans/Columns-GG-US-Back-Variation pages?

We are extremely interested in all variations. The scheme is to suffix page names to indicate variations; initially, I'd rename the existing pages (best to rename the attachments first, the page second) as Front-A and Back-A, then add new ones as -B. Alternatively, especially if there is a common pattern of redone boxes for ESRB ratings post 1994, suffixes could be -NoESRB and -ESRB.

Ok.

I'll scan and add them later.

I have a question regarding catalogues and misc. scans. I've added the ads and set ScanOf as "Catalogue" and uploaded the coupon as "Other". They appear in the index as the latest scans but they don't seem to appear in Catalogs and Others respectively. How do I add them?
Before uploading I did some research and realized all uploads are in Scans/ (not Scans/Catalogues nor Scans/Other), so I uploaded there, but they don't appear in the proper section. I thought the ScanOf value was all I needed.

The non-game section works similarly to the games - you need a "game page" for the item - maybe one for both? "Bundled ads" perhaps? (It is possible to add text to this page to explain what's going on.) This page has to be suffixed with -Other to show up in the Other section. Then the scan pages themselves have this as the prefix to their names so they get picked up.

Making links based on page names is more efficient than using the page contents themselves, and I think it's a bit more robust.

Right now, all uploads are considered shared by the group they are in, not the page. This was probably a mistake, as we have way too many in some groups to be maintainable, but it's hard to change now.

I fixed up the bundled ads to follow the above pattern. I also fixed a bug with the base page determination which was introduced by another change recently - so now the various auto-generated links work properly for the "Everything else" section.
