Arrangement.

A YM2413 version of Green Hills Zone from Sonic 2 SMS/GG. The style is similar to how Phantasy Star plays its songs in FM, thus it could have sounded like this ingame.

Made using smps2mid, MIDI Orchestrator Plus, an SB16.vxd with OPLL instrument set and mid2vgm OPLL. Recorded from the OPL3 chip of my Sound Blaster 16.

Original

The arpeggios are cool, but they get a little old after 1 minute.
Also the beat is way too repetitive, try to spice things up by adding some variations to the beat, especially in the parts were you stop the arpeggios, without them you have some sonic space left, in which you can fit a different beat without muddying it up the song.

Good job on this. Fun to listen.

To all users that listened to the VGM, I updated VGMPlay/in_vgm and fixed a small bug that prevented the snare drum from sounding.

btw: Actually I didn't intend to enter the competition. But a few days before the dealine I felt like doing some OPLL songs.
I did this song and Sonic Chaos: Special Stage 1, but Green Hills Zone turned out a little better and I decided to try my luck and enter the competition.

I worked on some Sonic 1 songs the day before and got bored by using the same instruments, so some of the instrument choices are indeed a little unusual.

It strikes me as more of an arrangement than a remix; as such it's more tied to the original PSG track... which I think isn't that great. Well, it's pretty good, really, but the drum speed seems weird to me.

I think it's also perhaps a missed opportunity to not use the extra channels of the YM2413 to add some chorus or similar effects to make it sound a bit less thin. Without that, it's mostly just two channels.

Overall, though, it sounds as professional as any PSG+FM game (like Phantasy Star), and as such it's an excellent conversion.
