Tectoy bizarre Master System and other things
Post Posted: Wed Mar 14, 2012 7:40 pm
Hi for everyone, I believe that somewhere, someone can show this bizarre SMS from tectoy, but I like to share some relevant info about this console.

I took one because a friend o' mine gave one, the controller does not work out at all. I turned on and both controllers does not make any command...

I opened and saw this :

Just a small main board, the power board on the right side and an extension of the A/V connectors... It's perfect to create a Ben Heck portable from it...

The console itself work with a low voltage, just 5V on the power base, but work too with a cellphone battery :

More than perfect to make a portable from!!!

Now the facts:

It's a really strange SMS because the sound pitch is higher than normal, like 15%, it's like use a NTSC console on PAL TVs.

Some games are "homebrew" creations of Tectoy, and there are some games translated too:

And the "real thing", after Street Fighter 2, Sonic Blast, Mortal Kombat 3 and many other exclusive Game Gear "rip-off" games, they put a Sonic Drift 2 version here to play.

The controller is specific too, "specific" just because the Start button mapped to it", I built one GGTV and made a controler with START mapped to the it and on this SMS Evo has the same pinout...

The case I used to adapt one BR SMS III that I have left here:

I just forgot the pause button!!!

That's all, I will build a list with the games later to share here.

This seems to be an emulator based machine... ? It could explain sound pitch issue

The stretched (?) GG game suggests it's emulation. I seem to remember in some earlier discussion of these later TecToy consoles that some of the original games aren't even running in the emulator.

Yeah, It stretched than the original screen (I mean using a GG TV) the pixels are in a strange way, the start button is mapped to the pause button, the start screen just pass pressing the START button on controller, suggesting an emulation.

Another proof of emulation is that the borders on the original SMS has colors according to the background (like sonic that the borders are blue) and on this SMS not, just black.

I first thought that if the main board are too small, they use the same oscillator for all the processors, Video and Audio and the frequency is higher than normal, an error project, because the in-game speed is the same like on an original machine. But the border problem, strange games, and the absence of other CI on the board left to me just the emulation option, like this one here : http://www.tectoy.com.br/produto_interna.php?id=8.

Seeing other products on the TecToy site I saw another "Sonic" game that is a bit rare and probably a GG conversion or emulation: Tails Adventure.

The Product:

http://www.tectoy.com.br/produto_interna.php?id=46

The Game list :

http://www.tectoy.com.br/pagina.php?tag=jogosmsportatil

wow.... I'm a big Sonic fan... why Tectoy do this with me...

These games here in Brazil are not cheap... it's rather expensive compared to other ones:

Here is an example : http://www.efacil.com.br/DetalheProduto.aspx?Codmer=2304741&Midia=12&utm_source=BuscaPe&utm_medium=xml_Games&utm_content=Video%20Game_2304741&utm_campaign=0

It's 189 reais, something like 100 dollars, you can buy a Playstation 2 here for 250 to 300 reais (142 to 170 dollars) or with the sam money buy an used Dreamcast, Playstation 1 or even N***ndo Game Cube console.

Tectoy are good on some points, bad on many other ones...

About the translated games, they're made of free-of-charge work of translator groups here in Brazil, according to the video I showed, Renegade has the year mismatching to the original and other thing that call my attention was on the first stage the walls have "CBT" written on them.

CBT was Companhia Brasileira de Tradução (Brazilian Translation Company), an extinct group that made some translations possible...

The link : http://www.romhackers.org/modules/PDdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=20&lid=199

The same with Enduro Racer : http://www.romhackers.org/modules/PDdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=20&lid=182

And the other translated that are on this console: http://www.romhackers.org/modules/PDdownloads/singlefile.php?cid=20&lid=188

Tectoy do nothing, just take the other's works and reproduce, like zeebo with the arcade emulator games...

Ressurrecting this post...

I'd love to get those (HB) games dumped. Or at least a couple of screenshots of them running...

I'm compiling here a list of all games made in Brazil (not only for SMS, but for every console, PC, etc) and not only those games aren't dumped, there isn't any screenshots of them online... (some of Devwork's games have their screenshots on their site, but even so - there are a lot who doesn't!)

For example, I could only find 1 youtube video showing "Arqueiro", and the quality is beyond poor :(

Games like "Ataque dos Vermes" I don't even know how it looks like :/

Edit: there is a brazilian video showing some of those games... too bad I can't capture the images, the streamers overlapped their faces on top of the corners :/

Side suggestion:
It would be nice if some of the important info/work done on Sega-Brasil.com.br related to the SMS/GG would be published/shared here. It's a great site but of course for non-english readers we're missing the bulk of it :)

To anyone reading this: I had one of those, and trust me, it's an abomination. None of the homebrew games are worth your time, except maybe batalha animal. The game selection is very poor. I couldn't count more than 20 good games. Don't get this.
