Anyone consider Console Exclusive Tags? As in games released on a specific console only and no other platform such as Alf (MS) and Girls Garden (SG1000/SC3000)

-----------------

**Work in Progress**

This is a list of 8 bit Sega games which were originally released on a specific system.

Games exclusively (excluding emulation) released on a system are marked with # symbol

SG1000/SC3000:

Girl's Garden

Master System:

4 Pak All Action (Unl)
94 Super World Cup (Unl)
Aerial Assault SMS -> GG
Air Rescue
#Alex Kidd BMX Trial
#Alex Kidd in High Tech World / Anmitsu Hime
#Alex Kidd in Miracle World
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World
Aladdin
#Alf
American Baseball SMS original?
American Pro Football SMS original?
Agigongnyong Dooly / The Dinosaur Dooley (Unl) SMS original
Ashura / Rambo / Secret Command SMS original?
Assault City SMS original
Astérix SMS original
Astérix and the Secret Mission SMS/GG original
Astro Warrior SMS original
Aztec Adventure SMS original
Basketball Nightmare SMS original
Batman Return SMS/GG original (like Aladdin, all other versions are different games AFAIK)
Battle Out Run SMS original
Black Belt SMS original
Blade Eagle 3-D SMS original
BMX Trial Alex Kidd SMS original
Buggy Run SMS original ? (unsure)
#Castelo Rá-Tim-Bum
#Sítio do Picapau Amarelo
Zillion (Akai Koudan)

Game Gear:

#Sonic Drift
#Sonic Drift 2
#Sonic Triple Trouble
#Tails Adventure
#Tails' Skypatrol

Yes this is in important tag. Although I'm more attached to the idea of tagging games that were created and born on one system rather than the idea of exclusivity. What would be a good name for such tag?

They also happen to be the best games IHMO (well apart from Alf).

We could have "SMS Exclusive", "GG Exclusive", "SG Exclusive", etc. Mobygames ought to be a good resource to check for ports.

I also thought of "SMS Exclusive", "GG Exclusive", "SG Exclusive" tags. But after thinking of Virtual Console releasing many Master System games will make this a very short list indeed. (Not that I have anything against VC emulation of Master System games.)

However then Bock's idea seems better. And I agree that games are usually the best on their original system in comparison to a port.

I believe a tag along the lines of "Original System" (Something like this - sorry I'm bad with grammar!) would be the best :).

I don't think emulated releases count as ports.

Do you mean to single out games that were made for that platform originally, even if they were subsequently ported? I think that could live alongside exclusivity information, as I'm sure people are interested in that too. (We'd also like to single out the original games for ports.) It is a grey area, though - for example, does Enduro Racer count as an SMS original? How about games that were co-developed for SMS and GG, and not ported?

Enduro Racer I say is an original SMS game because its very different from the arcade version. So in a sense it was created a new game.

Fantasy Zone isn't.
Fantasy Zone II is (there is a rare arcade version but SMS one is clearly the "master").

Games co-developed on SMS/GG could both have the tags unless it is clear that one is a careless after-though port (as in eg: TecToy port).

Wonder Boy III - arguably a "master" on the SMS. Does the GG version deserve the same tag it is really grey area for this specific game since it was ported to GG a year or two later and reworked for the purpose.

"master version"
"son of its era" (doesn't that sounds fancy)

I admit in a way I would like to find a way to expose the games that define the console but this tag only wouldn't be enough for that purpose. Psycho Fox ?

What about the GG Exclusive, MS Exclusive, etc. idea

And instead of pointing out games which originated on MS/GG (due to issues of co-development) tagging games which have been ported from other systems. Basically the opposite of what we've been thinking about ;). Seems like the simplest solution doesn't it?

I'm sure many of the later European releases are "system originals", e.g. The Flash, but they're not really defining games. Some would argue that Psycho Fox is a rehash of that NES game and therefore not a "master", but of course we are at liberty to ignore them :)

Whatever tag we use, we'll have to explain it in the tag page anyway.

If we instead single out ported games, we either end up with one huge Port tag or many tags like "Arcade Port", "Mega Drive Port", etc and then grey areas when the original game was co-developed for many platforms.

We could build up porting lists for games, e.g. listing platforms the game was ported to with relevant links, but it'd be a lot of effort for something we don't care much about and it still wouldn't single out games that originated on Sega 8-bit consoles.

One day we might have a voting system that might surface the best games on the system, which would perhaps better match the "defining games", but it still wouldn't be perfect (I can imagine a lot of people voting down Teddy Boy, My Hero, Girl's Garden...). Maybe the solution is just to editorialise? Just make a "Defining Game" tag and perhaps have some words to explain why it each so great/important/whatever. Again, we are the masters of our world so we can be tyrannical when it suits us :)

I still think we should have "XXX exclusive" tags (maybe including "SMS+GG Exclusive" if appropriate) as well.

Sounds good to me! =)

What is confusing is wikipedia since for example AK:MW is considered to be released on Master System and Wii.... but it's only emulated on the Wii through virtual console. So if we agree VC/XBLA re-releases I think the exclusive thing will work well =)

We already have a tag for Wii "re-releases" so they're clearly delineated anyway (AKMW being a good example of an SMS exclusive with Wii re-release).

Does anyone want to work on a list of system exclusives to get us started? I imagine there will be some debate... I'll split this off to its own thread.

Alex Kidd the Lost Stars is an arcade game.
I'm more interested in the "System Originals" list. The System Exclusive list both tricky to write and relate to as a user, because many games received very obscure ports. As in, there is an arcade version of "Champion Baseball" but I don't like anyone here is likely to have played it.

I think it's still worthwhile. Maybe we should consider Originals rather than Exclusives, as one is a superset of the other (e.g. Fantasy Zone II is SMS original, not SMS exclusive).

For the "Defining Game" tag, I think it is even more difficult, as it is really a matter of opinion and requires some justification (and argument) for every example. One idea I had was to require each game to be nominated by someone who would write a short article about the game, its importance, comparison to other games in the genre, etc.

Lets forget about the defining game for now, its probably too wide of an effort. Originals sounds like a better approach. I don't mean Exclusive but the list may be very short and unappealing.

Aerial Assault SMS -> GG
Alex Kidd in Miracle World SMS original
Alex Kidd in Shinobi World SMS original
Alf SMS original
American Baseball SMS original?
American Pro Football SMS original?
Anmitsu Hime SMS original
Ashura SMS original?
Assault City SMS original
Astérix SMS original
Astérix and the Secret Mission SMS/GG original
Astro Warrior SMS original
Aztec Adventure SMS original

4 PAK All Action SMS original
94 Super World Cup Soccer SMS original

Aladdin SMS/GG - one can argue they created an original game for those version, which fits the description (just Sonic on the SMS would because it is not a downport of Sonic Megadrive).

Alex Kidd High Tech World also an original along with Anmitsu Hime ihmo.

Agigongnyong Dooly SMS original
Akai Koudan Zillion SMS original (I'm looking in the Games/ listing which has Zillion listed in A).

Basketball Nightmare SMS original
Batman Return SMS/GG original (like Aladdin, all other versions are different games AFAIK)
Battle Out Run SMS original
Black Belt SMS original
Blade Eagle 3-D SMS original
BMX Trial Alex Kidd SMS original
Buggy Run SMS original ? (unsure)

I rejected AKHTW as Anmitsu Hime is the original. It's an edge case we need to deal with.

How about Air Rescue, which is nothing like the arcade game?

I ignored Korean games as I have no idea how original they are.

I also excluded the "see" games (like Zillion) to avoid looking at them twice :)

Would also label it as System original. Do we agree on that?

Maybe we can tag the (absolutely) system exclusives as well as the system originals? Two tags ^_^
