Level maps: Pengo (Game Gear)
Post Posted: Thu Aug 11, 2011 12:22 pm
Maxim, in the Factory Panic maps thread wrote
I look forward to future contributions :)
Since I didn't want to disappoint Maxim, I decided to start working on more maps, and I chose Pengo.

Now, a couple of questions.

1: I am not sure if I should upload the raw maps, or if I should highlight the eggs. Let me provide an example to show you what I mean. Note that I didn't attach the following images since they're temporary, I didn't even pngout them, they just serve as an example.

These are the maps of the first 8 levels (out of 64):

And these are the same maps, with highlighted eggs:

I already have all the maps without the eggs, I would need some time to prepare the ones with the eggs. Let me know which kind is preferred so I can work on them.

2: How am I supposed to pick a significant 100×100 thumbnail out of a 104×120 map?

1. Do what pleases you the most. Mapping is somewhat subjective much of the time. If the egg locations are a horrible spoiler then maybe don't? Maybe I could add "spoiler" support to the site, so marked pages have a click-through...
2. Just take the middle in the absence of anything more reasonable. It's a bit wasteful but I imagine these are the smallest maps we'll see.

The egg locations aren't a spoiler, as they are highlighted in this very way (I didn't invent this green shade, it is used in game) every once in a while, including the beginning of the level. I think they should be included, even though this means I'll have more work to do. Yay.

As for the thumbnails, ok. I wonder if there is a way to batch crop a bunch of files...

Irfanview will do the batch crop for you. I recommend it for this sort if thing, it's very fast.

Maps are kind of a spoiler by definition, but you can make them less so by omitting items or enemies, and not highlighting routes and secrets, but a lot of the time the map is of no real use except for looking pretty.

Well I prepared all the 64 maps with the eggs, since it makes more sense in my opinion. I attached them to this post for the usual review before I upload them.
If you have the tools to make thumbnails quickly, feel free to help me :)

There's no need for the review stage any more, your maps are all fine. For reference, I spent about 20s configuring Irfanview and it then took about 1s to do the cropping :) Imagemagick can probably do the same if you prefer that sort of thing. I also added them (with some lazy naming as it's easier for me that way):

An alternative in cases like this (small maps) is to tile them into a single image, e.g. Puzzle Bobble. You could use the yellow frame as seen in-game to separate them.
