vg-fighter

vingazole wrote
Hi, this is my entry for the Coding Competition : it's an old-school shoot'em up that I called 'vg-fighter' (vg for VinGazole, of course).

I wrote it with WLA, using MEKA (and Kega Fusion) for debugging, using Bock's "Kun" source code to start as
it's my first ever Z80 program.
I created the graphics with a little 16x16 editor in FreePascal that I created for the occasion.
I composed the music with Guitar Pro but the version you can hear is only a two-channel arrangement as I use
channels #2 and #3 for the sound effects and I hadn't enough time to code a more elaborated 'sound player' !

Best gameplay in this competition, though it still feels unfinished.

Solid. Not a complete game- at least on SMS Plus the gameover isn't graceful, it just freezes the player and shots while the enemies keep coming, and some indication of score or hits remaining would be nice. On the plus side, the objective is obvious and the controls are responsive, and I'm not going to play down the complexity of not only enemies which move and shoot in varying directions, but also some form of level structure to spawn enemies over time in planned formations. I've always been a fan of the top-down shooter as a genre for feeling out the capabilities of unfamiliar platforms, and I look forward to seeing what this game could become given a few more months :)

Game Over could definitely use some work, and bullets seem to disappear about 16px from the bottom of the screen. I suck at this sort of game :) but after dying I saw a nice variety of enemy formations, although the animation and enemy types were a bit limited. There's some bonus marks for actually having original sound.
