Glitches in Master System games
Post Posted: Sun Feb 06, 2011 3:25 am
Well, it's this simple =P if we have a 'Cheats page', with nearly all known cheats for any Master System games, ... why don't we put on a 'Glitches page' too? Or.... if it already exists, where can I find it? =P

For now I just remember these glitches:

Alex Kidd in Miracle World:
- use the item to fly when underwater, there, you freeze the game..
- run and crawl to the left when in the entrance to Janken Castle, and then the game starts changing enemies to different rooms, and eventally the game crashes at some point in the final screens..
- if you pause the game when going to the room down in a castle and resume play and keep pausing and resuming, Alex start appearing a little higher in screen, and then he disappears, and the game gets completely crazy.. =P
(there is actually a few more on this game that were posted on youtube...)

Well..... ? xP

In Transbot (SMS), some of the more powerful weapons (like C) can only have one "bullet" on-screen at a time. As some of them can penetrate most enemies, this means it often has to scroll completely off the right side before you can fire again. However, each button press deducts from your weapon supply even if it doesn't fire, so if you use a turbo fire button (or just press the button really fast), you can almost immediately run out of that weapon. With a turbo button you can get as few as 3-4 shots, total.

If you get a crappy weapon, this can be useful to get rid of it quickly (like E or F).

During the end screen in Sonic 1, where Robotnik is flying across Green Hill Zone, pausing and unpausing causes the Scrapbrain music to start.

Wonder Boy in Monster Land's teleport glitch (press left plus right together while in the air.) This leads to all sorts of shortcuts and sprite glitches when used in the right place.

Left + right in Sonic 2 causes him to fly to the left in his screech to a halt pose.

In The Ninja, use left+right to walk in place. Press button 1 to fire a knife/shuriken that stays in place. It is still dangerous to enemies.

Punch the one remaining rock from under a scorpion in Alex Kidd in Miracle World and it will fly in place.

On round 2n + 1 in My Hero, enter the Mohikan battle with a frog's projectile still on screen. It will turn into his flying forehead.

In Ghost House... oh wait they did that on purpose :p

The Development pages may be appropriate for these. If we collect enough, it is easy to move it to a new "Glitches" section. Do you guys want to collect evidence (videos/screenshots)?

Wonder Boy 3:
* Jumping while stabbing at the right moment, while in a spot only 2 or 3 blocks high, sometimes causes the Hu-Man form to offset horizontally. This can result in graphics glitches and even penetration of walls. (Not sure what other conditions this happens in, see ).
* You can not get the heart containers out of order due to the simple increment in memory that just stores how many you have. If you miss one, you cannot get any more until you go back for it.
* By alternately pressing left and right quickly while in water, Piranha-Man can rise above the water and actually swim through the air. This allows interesting sequence breaking possibilities, such as getting the Legendary equipment early.
* Entering a malformed continue code to reference an out-of-range "available transformation forms/defeated dragons" integer causes doors to become silent. If you go through a Return door, your sprite becomes totally invisible. Example: MKWH WBX TR5J 0WW
* Entering a malformed continue code to reference an out-of-range "current form" causes the game to glitch and sort-of-freeze (you can still access the pause menu, sort of). Example: AC3E 3L0 004D Y0R.
* Entering a silly continue code whereby your form is something other than Piranha-man, and your available forms are set above this (eg Hawk-Man), and you are not in possession of the Thunder Saber, means the game is unwinnable. You need Piranha Man (far right in desert) or the Thunder Saber (sky palace, village) to transform, but the Dragons that would transform you to Piranha Man are inaccessable as they are flagged as defeated (via "available forms"), and you need Piranha-Man to get the Thunder Saber.
* Also, found this: ... not sure what exactly is being done there, something with the Kashmir Sword (GG version of Tasmanian) causing color glitches leading to weird graphics.

Edit:
* If you die wearing the Hades armor, you are supposed to get a one-time resurrection. However, if you never re-equip another armor, that resurrection continues to be applied (effectively indestructible).

In Sonic the Hedgehog on Stage 1-2 start running to the right and rolling from the point in the first screenshot (just before the diagonal ramp and the end of the stage), if you create enough speed (hold right on your pad) you'll end up in zero space (screenshot 2)

Funny thing, years and years ago I found a quite similar glitch on that stage, but on the caves section, near the idden 1Up monitor.
I never tried to recreate it using emulators, but on the real hardware used to happen to me a few times.

Another bug in another game:

While playing Sega World Tournament Golf, if you are on 5th hole [of Country Club field] and drop the ball in the green of the "neighbour" hole in the left (which is 17th hole), in the next shot you can only use the putt. This strange behaviour also happens the other way round, when you are playing 17th hole and the ball goes to the 5th hole's green. Here are some pics:

For inclusion on the site, can you post 1:1 screenshots in PNG? In Kega, you can select the "raw" output stage to get 1:1 but still oversized images.

Would anyone like to volunteer to add them to the site?

Sonic the Hedgehog bugs

Green Hill:
Image 1- If you get enough speed and perform a spin dash, you can just push forward and you will pass through the entire stage without taking any hits =P The camera can't follow him as it is too fast!

Image 2- At the second water hole in this underground path, you can jump and get inside the wall ... to release Sonic from there, just jump and he will be teleported to the upper part of this stage =P

Image 3- If you repeat the first bug in the end of Stage 1-2, he will go off the stage and get stuck nowhere, and you'll have to reset the game in this situation x_x

Image 4- Maybe it's not a bug, but Robotnik should be out of reach for Sonic when he is flying up there, but after his first attempt of attacking, you can hit him up there if you jump in the right moment.. xP

Bridge:
Image 5- Not a terrible bug, just if you try to stop in the middle of these bridges, Sonic stands in the same place but running =P

Image 6- In the second bonus stage, get the continue set, and walk near the final sign, but leave a space in the left, .. and fall into it, the sign will appear there =P

Image 7- Well, this one is really weird: after you defeat Robotnik, fall through the hole on the right, and when you start again, there will be no background music O.o the mute ends when the fight starts again =P

Jungle:
Image 8- Finish the first act with 30 rings, you get the ring sign at the end, but when it turns 40, the sign magically changes into Robotnik =P You get ot keep the ten free rings, anyway .. XD

Image 9- On the fifth vine going up the boss act, you fall off, spin, and hold right, .. when you die, you'll be off the stage =P

Labyrinth:
Image 10- When you should be squashed by the platform, instead, you enter the wall, and can be teleported up again .. this is actually useful if you're drowning =P

Image 11- This enemy throws its 4 shots at you, but most of them usually disappears =P

Image 12- Not really a glitch but ... why does Sonic have acquired infinite air on the boss act? =P

Scrap Brain (known to the author Thiago as Labyrinth 2, or Iron Labyrinth):
Image 13- On act 2, go in little steps to the edge, and fall off, .. don't touch the directional now ... and then, Sonic falls into the room =P you can even use it to economize time, it's one trip you won't have to do \o/

Image 14- At the tunnel door, jump to this non existant platform, you can stand there =P

Image 15- There is this point after chasing Robotnik that Sonic appears under the elevator =P

Sky Base:
Image 16- Act 2 ... if you keep flying slowly to the right, at some point you'll be pushed away by a magic wall that obviously mean you've reached the end of stage, ... well, that's not really a bug, but, ... it's noticeable =P

Image 17- If you jump right near these cannons, there is a way you can reach the end of this act =P

Image 18- Near the emerald, sometimes it glows on Sonic's picture, like it was a reflect =P

Image 19- Get ot the final boss with your shield, and lose it in the right moment, there! You can be side by side with your archenemy .. XD

Image 20- Jump to the teleporter while Robotnik is going away,... and both will be teleported at the same time =P

Image 21 and 22- Some frames have really weird images blinking there on the final 1up O.o

Image 23 and 24- and worse, you can reveal Sonic's image on Robotnik's leg at some points O_o

And more: I don't know if it's just on Mega Drive, but.. at some precise points of stages, Sonic's jump does not make him crawl =P ...

(Well THAT'S a bug now ... the images should be PNG but they came out as JPG when I saved them outside orkut.... bummer) +_+

This seems to happen when you finish any act with exactly 30 rings.

Here's one I neglected to mention earlier. In the toy stage in Castle of Illusion, you use a key to open the door to the boss. Put the key in just the right spot, stand between the key and the door, and pick the key up. You'll lift the entire door, and continuously zoom right to left in the boss room until you throw the door or get hit.

I remember this glitch in Alex Kidd in Shinobi World, I found it easily when I was a kid. I think just mashing left and right when on a ladder makes it happens.
