Here's a few codes for the Game Gear.
To be used with Fusion or whatever other emulator that uses Pro Action Replay codes.

Thanks for that. I didn't really know about the cheat wiki at the time, but after reading that page, it seems like a lot of work ><. I posted these and a few more codes on gshi.org. Here is the link http://gshi.org/vb/showthread.php?t=2546 . I picked that site because its a code database. I also posted them here since It seemed only about Master System/Game Gear. I don't plan on making anymore for the game gear, unless someone request one. I am currently working on making some master system codes though, a few here and there when I have time. I'll post them here also when I'm finished with those.

I've been adding more PAR codes as I make them.
But how do you make a new page?

Like I have found a debug mode for the 2 Power Rangers GameGear games, but there's no Power Rangers page to put the codes on.

GameGear Game Genie and Action Replay cheats

Sorry for bumping this old topic again, but here are some codes I created for the GameGear for your cheat section of the site. I have some for the SMS also to post later.

I was targeting codes from when you blink after getting hit. Invincibility means your health don't decrease, Invulnerability means you sometimes blink, but usually can walk through enemies and such...


Nine digit codes are Game Genie codes (ROM).
Eight digit codes are Pro Action Replay codes (RAM).

One dash is a Action Replay code, two dashes is a Game Genie code.
If a code starts with 00 and has a ":" in it, than it's an AR code.

Note: If you are using an AR code of Invulnerability, but find that your character also goes invisible, here's what to do:
The very last two digits of the AR codes are the value in hex, decrease the value by one until you reappear.

As stated above, here's the recent codes I've made for the Master System.

I'm aware that there is no Game Genie device for the SMS, but emulators such as Fusion support them. You could also hack Game Genie codes into the rom, for emulators without code support.

To use SMS Game Genie codes on real hardware, you will need the cheat device, a game converter, and a Sega Game Gear.

If you are hacking games to find these, the approach I usually take is:

- Find where it's being tracked. Often it's a buffer of keypresses in RAM, sometimes it's a counter.
- If it's a buffer, set a read breakpoint on it (b r xxxx). When it's hit, look at the code and see what it's being compared to. View the memory (m xxxx) to see the keypresses (hex 01 02 04 08 10 20 usually).
- If it's a counter, set a write breakpoint (b w xxxx) and do the same thing.

I doubt you would remember, but I added many PAR codes to the database back in '07. I'll do what I can in the little spare time I have these days.

I'm not sure what the code does, I figured one of you guys that are more familiar with the game would know.

Maybe one day, if you have a lot of extra time, you can teach me how you did that.

As you know, that code was the buffer type you spoke of.
So far, the only type I am able to find is the RAM counter address.

I'm very new to debuggers, but I understand what you are saying.
Are the instructions you wrote for MEKA?
The only debugger I've used for SMS/SGG is MESS and Cheat Engine so far.

You make it sound so simple by saying 'see what it's being compared to', but I'm not yet at that level of ASM thinking.

I'm referring to Meka. Its debugger is superior to anything else I've tried (although I haven't tried MESS, which I imagine has the MAME debugger which ought to be pretty good...).

I'll see if I can write up the Halley Wars one later. Basically, I saw it was filling a buffer, then I set a read breakpoint on the start of the buffer, and disassembled the code around the point where it hit. To check the buffer, it (mostly) has to be comparing it to ROM, so look for nearby opcodes that are referring to ROM addresses (16-bit numbers less than $c000) and look at the ROM at that location. If you see keypress codes (numbers with only one bit set), there's your cheat code.

Halley Wars cheat reverse engineering

Assumption: you have noticed that the keypresses are being stored at memory address $c1e0 while on the title screen.

When storing to a buffer, that means there must be a time when the buffer is checked to see if it matches the right "code". Set a read breakpoint in Meka (you need to enable the debugger first...):

Those are keystrokes. Either learn to convert (UDLR12 from right to left in the byte) or just watch the RAM viewer in Meka to figure out what key is what number. Since 4 = L and 8 = R, our code is done. I tried it in-game to see what the result was.

I can't see that the Star Wars cheat does anything. It sets DE7C=01 but this is never used in-game as far as I can tell.

The cheat is the same for the SMS version. There, it gives you a level select on the continue screen (so you have to die first). I can't seem to die in the GG version?

yeah but i don't have a PAR for Game Gear or Master System
so game genie is the only alternative for something like that if you want to play the actual game on a system

Yep, it seems you get infinite lives on the first level. (when you die, you just start it over)
Oh, and it seems if you use the level select to go to a cutscene, it will just loop the cutscene endlessly.

I can now report that I've made good use of the detailed info you posted above, Maxim.

I noticed the Game Gear game Hyokkori Hyoutan Jima counted 16 button presses of either/or buttons 1 and 2. Directly before that counter in the RAM was a buffer for 16 button presses.



I figured I would go ahead and try what you mentioned of seeing what ROM address accessed the RAM. I loaded up the old MESS emulator I already had ready to go.



I knew that RAM was C000 and up, so I just looked for a nearby ROM address to open the ROM at with the hex editor.

I tried the 09C9 address, and could easily see a sequence of buttons in the ROM.



So therefore:

At the Title Screen press 1(8x), 2(8x), Start for a Level Select number to appear at the top of the screen.

That Garfield screen is visually identical to the ones in the Ecco games, and it turns out they were made by the same developer (Novotrade, who also did Foreman For Real). There's only one game left that they did - The Adventures of Batman and Robin - that has no such cheat discovered, so it's quite likely there is one waiting to be found...

Hyokkori Hyoutan Jima has "HARD MODE!" in its title screen tiles waiting to be displayed... but I can't see how. Maybe it's not a cheat, but a "reward" for finishing the game?

I was about to ask if you seen the full cheat menu for it, but I noticed the image on the Garfield cheat page. I have to say it's likely the best debug menu I've found for the Game Gear.

The Klax code may be a stage select, maybe check that.

Also I got to thinkin', it's possible that entering both codes together (for Crayon Shin Chan) may have some effect. It counted 32 button presses before cycling back to 0, that's why I thought it was only 1 code at first.

Can someone document what they do?

By the way, it was easy to find them: in the debugger, break on reads of the first memory address you noted: "b r c103" and then wait for it to be hit. Then look at the pointers: "m hl" shows c103, the RAM data; "m de" shows some nice looking 01 02 04 08 keypress-looking data.

Chicago Syndicate: I couldn't figure out how to trigger it in-game but try "j 150d" to go to the cheat itself. While searching I found an "exit training mode" prompt screen which can lead to it if several other variables are set, but it seems the game never shows this screen?

I don't know of a cheat code for Yogi Bear, but I just disassembled a level select code for the released Game Boy version of Yogi Bear.

Up, Down, Left, Right, Right, Right, Up, Down, Right, Left, Left, Left, B on the title screen.
I then tested it and found the level select code works on the Game Gear proto as well (1 instead of B).

Desert Speedtrap: go to the options screen, select tune 09 and sound 12. You can now change the difficulty to "CHEAT". This works on the SMS version too. It seems to disable enemy hits - so no damage and no interference with movement - but I didn't figure out any other effects.

I'm pretty sure all of them are working. The passwords that are stored as plain text and easily visible with a hex editor I seen myself. I posted some of those things on GameFaqs myself, and recently found the Baku Baku Animal, Bubble Bobble and Tintin in Tibet passwords.

Also, just now, I finally figured out how to make that "CHEAT MODE ACTIVE " text display in the Superman - The Man of Steel game. You have to get a high score and enter your initials as ZAQ. To skip to the next stage hold 1+2 during game play for a few seconds.

They're not the best way to go about it though, for instance once you access one of the new menus it's best not to use the Up button again until disabling the code. I'm sure you could make something better, the RAM address for the menu modifier is C515.

About me adding the cheats from GameFAQs to this site, not sure if that's a good idea. I'm afraid I'll mess something up. I tried to make a couple pages for The Cutting Room Floor a couple times and thought that wiki editing was pretty complicated. By the way, you guys should maybe contribute to that site sometime, their SMS/GG databases are rather lacking compared to other systems.

I had a go at hacking MMPR: The Movie to get at the Check Option menu without codes, but it seems like it's not possible - there's three tables to drive the menu, the normal one, the extra options one (via the known cheat) and a third one that is not referenced anywhere. You can set ROM[20BE]=F2 to use it (when the cheat is not active), but it doesn't display anything.
